I really need help... I spent 3 hours on the phone with dell and they couldn't help.

I create a new dvd in my dvd on roxio 9 and everything goes fine until I go to burn and it freezes.

We need you to describe this a bit better please.
You say it's "freezing", but does that mean the program does not function at all?
Does it mean that it's at 0% progress with only a black preview screen?
What options did you use when trying to burn? Burn to Disc, Disc image, Video Folders, or a combination of these options?

Also, a bit of information about your PC would be helpful (like what you see in my signature).

So, you're saying that rather than being and exothermic reaction, as you're expecting (burning) it's actually endothermic (freezes)?  (Sorry, I really couldn't resist.)   :)

It let's me do a new project in mydvd ad the movie/slideshow and preview it just fine but when I push the burn button and try and save to just a file the burn project window just sits there with no progress and a little black window.  I have a brand new not even a month old dell xps410
I was up until 12am and trying it again at 5:30 am... please help it's driving me crazy... just about ready to return the software.  thank you so much.

Can you give us the details on the video card your PC has?  Is it built onto the motherboard or a separate card?  If built-in, what chip-set?  If separate card, what card, and how much memory?  In either case, make sure you have the latest firmware installed for the card, check the Dell web-site to see if there's a newer level, this is critical for MyDVD, especially if it is set for Hardware rendering.  Alternatively, you can set it to Software rendering and see if that makes any difference.

That sounds like it's a problem related to your video card/chip. You need to check to see if there is an updated driver for your video card/chip and install it. If you already have the most current driver, then try uninstalling it, and then re-installing it. That should get it past the non-rendering  (freezing as you called it).

It can't hurt. Do you also have the current version of DirectX9c installed?

You mean which version of DirectX you have installed?  Click Start -> Run and type in "dxdiag" (no quotes) and press Enter.  On the front screen it will display the version of DirectX you're running.

That sounds current, or reasonably so.  It's the same version I'm running.

Ok, you have the DirectX version you need. You still have the problem after uninstalling, then re-installing your video driver, correct?

We'll need you to give us some more information about your system. As detailed  specs as you can (see my signature for an example), especially the make/model/driver version of your video card. Without the system info, it's hard to guess at what else to suggest.

One more question first... what DVD writer do you have, and have you checked to make sure you have the latest firmware version?

I have an NEC writer and not sure about the firmware on that, however that really would have nothing to do with trying to output as any other format would it?  The NEC is a portable writer and only connected whne necessary as I attache it to many other systems when needed.  I can not even make my production into a WMV, avi or ISO.

Okay... it sounds like we need to start further back.  When does your system freeze up, when you go to write something to a DVD?  Can you write a Data DVD?  If EMC is trying to talk to your drive, then the firmware will have something to do with the process.  Is your drive connected when you're trying to do whatever you're doing?

And, what are you trying to create, a video project?  What application are you running where it freezes, VideoWave or My DVD?

At this point, we need a fresh start where you give us not just system specs, but tell us exactly what you're doing when it freezes.

I have created a VW project, When I select the output and choose all my settings, avi or output to email, it comes up with the screen that says "rendering" a black box appears, and the status remains at 0%.  My computer is then non responsive.  I have to  hard reboot.  I then tried with myDVD, I brong in the VW project and tried to burn to ISO and same symptoms as above.  I again hard rebooted, connected my dvd, and created the same dvd project but instead of output to ISO I choose dvd.  Same symptoms as above.  All get to the rendering screen, 0% status - non responsive system.  The problem can be reproduced everytime ANY output is selected.  Bottom line, I can make a production but can not output it to any format.

DVD-RW is fully functional on three systems including this one.
