but now find that this software wont let me import the film.
the video is in a folder called VIDEO_TS and then theres files inside.
VTS_01_1 this is a gig file the rest are fairly small
VIDEO_TS
VIDEO_TS.IFO
VTS_01_0.IFO
VIDEO_TS.BUP
VTS_01_0.BUP
What i need to know is if i can use this software or was i sold a dud by the guy in PC world.
Or is there a way to convert the files to ones that Roxio will reconise?
btw it dose play on the video player software included and the decoder i brought from roxio for media player to.
I realy dont want to keep buying software that dont do what im told it dose.

That first file should be a VOB file and you should be able to copy it to your computer. Make sure windows shows hidden file extensions and then rename the file to (filename).mpg2. You should be able to use that file directly in VideoWave. Open VideoWave, click to add movie/image, navigate to the file and select it, click add. You can now edit it.
It would help greatly if you post what software you bought - look at the box or invoice and also post your computer specs. You have to have a computer and OS that will work with that software.

Are these files on a mini disc recorded with that camera?
If so, if you finalize the disc using the camera, place it in your dvd drive on the pc, you should then be able to use Media Import to "capture" the video to your hard drive.

Ok tried the rename to 1.mpg now it getsa little complex
If i try to run the 1mpg file inside the folder with the other files it runs. if i move the 1.mpg file outside that folder i get this error - 2048: the file is not a movie file
Also yes those files or should i say the original ones are on a 8cm dvd disc -r and the disk is finalised. ill try the media import, sounds hopefull
ok for some reason when i try to capture i select video, then my dvd drive (H:) and it pops back to the select drive .

If i put a cd with pics on it in the dvd drive it takes them off fine. so its not the drive itself.
"edit"( Oh and just remembered. if i try to capture from the dvd on the image tab it shows the files. just wont play them.)
It will let me now rename the 1gig vob file to mpg or mpeg2 and it will run the video but it runs the first 18 seconds then stutters a few frames and ends. it shows the length at 19 seconds even though its closer to 29 mins.
Im about ready to throw the thing in the street. was up all night trying diff things and trying to get help for what surly must be a simple thing to do.
i did read somewhere that Sony dvd cams save in a odd format, but VOB seems used everywhere. i dont pretend to understand the ins and outs. i AM a total newb in this area but there must be a simple way to edit and stuff from a dvd. it was the whole reason for buying a dvd camcorder, simplicity.
I realy am greatfull for the help so far, its hard to help when you not looking at whats happening and the person asking for help knows less than the average 5 yr old about digi vid

First off you don't show the Audio button on the import screen, like Larry and I do! Why that is I don't know.
Below (first two pics) is a Sony mini DVD -R, I changed to 1.mpg and tried to have videowave 8 open. I copy the VTS_01_1 to a new folder on the hd and change to 1.mpg there. Only way vw8 will see it ( in a folder).
It gave me the red x, this would work in version 7.5, no red x!
Next pic I'm in v8 import, from the mini DVD disc and it will import.
Last pic is videowave 8 excepting the imported file from the disc.
I wish I had a answer for you but something in your installation seems to be broke.

seen a couple of other topics about same problem on this forum now so at least i know its not just me.
The way they "got around" it was using VOB2MPG a prog some one recomended. i tried it and it transfers to a mpg file that seems to work ok. where as they just refuse to work right if i just change the file extension.
Now i just need to work out how to edit it. but for that the manual will have most of what i need im sure
i think i use video wave8 and find some way to cut it up to the bits i want.
As for the no audio tab, yeah i did notice that and thought it was just a version thing. will look in to that more soon as i will want to rip a few cd tracks to mp3 for backing to the home vid.
thanks again for all of your effort, all of you. problem aint solved but at least we had a #$^@ good crack at it

I'm at a loss also at this point as to why it won't import from that disc. If VOB2MPG will work to get them onto your hard drive as mpeg files, I would go ahead and stick to that, as that was your goal in using Media Import or renaming the file(s).
For editing, yes you use the VideoWave program to do that. There should be help files and or tutorials included that explain how to do moast of the basic editing in VideoWave.

100% right on the audio thing, its not the full suite and im missing a few options. when i click on them it tells me to upgrade to emc 9
cant seem to get VW to take the 1 mpg file and chop it up in to small bits yet. but only been playing realy, will have a good read of the manual.
VOB2MPG works but sort of defeats the point of a all in 1 package. (or so the assistant in shop said it was)
