I was told that Grampa Bruce is very knowledgeable in DVD applications, so, if you care to respond I would appreciate it.

I have been trying to copy all my CD-RW disks to DVD-RW. The CD-RW were created on an older machine using win98SE and Roxio Ver. 5.0. The DVD is in a new machine running Win Xp Pro and uses Sonic's Record Now Plus, Ver. 7.3 software. The procedure I am following is as follows:

I am copying all files on the CD-RW to a Project directory on the new machine. I then change the file attributes using AttributeMagic Pro, or I manually attempt to change file attributes. I format a new DVD-RW using the format command with the "Use with DLA" box checked off. I then copy all the files located in the project directory to the DVD.

When I access the copied files I am able to read, alter and save the file back to itself as if I were writing to a hard drive with the following exception: All Microsoft word documents are read back as read only, which prevents me from altering and saving the file back to itself. I can save it back under a different name, but that is not my intent. When I use the file properties to change the attribute, it changes, but I am still getting the read only message.

I attempted to use the CMD=ATTRIB to change the file attributes, but for some reason I get a syntax error. The command is issued as follows:
C:\ATTRIB -R C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\NAME\MY DOCUMENTS\MY PROJECTS\ROOT DIRECTORY /S /D
What am I mssing that is causing a syntax error?

How do I get through this maze of file attribute problems?

Anyone, Please!

What version of Microsoft Word? And DLA?

You've got to remember that when a disc is formatted with DLA, when ever you replace a file, you're not really updating it or replacing it, you're deleting the old file and creating a new file with the same filename as the old file. Hard drives do the same thing but it's not as big a deal to write with a hard drive as it is to burn something. Word might not be recognizing the DLA technology and sees that the file is on a read only disc that you won't be able to edit.

Has this worked in the past?

Hi Keven,

I'm using MSOffice 2000 on an Xp pro machine, and the revision of DLA that came with the Sonic Solutions is 1.4.8.0 - that's the version of the executable. I just started to get into the file conversions, and this is the first incident that occured with MS Word. I checked Microsoft forums and I think their may be a problem with Word. I've cleared the attributes of the Word files before reading them into Word. I can read the files OK, but the minute I go to save them I get the read-only message. All other files apprear to work OK, ie., Photoshop, Corel Draw, PageMaker, etc. The current DLA came with Sonic's Record Now application V. 7.3

Thanks for your response

Actually, ALL Packet-Writing programs (Sonic's DLA, Roxio's Drag2Disc and DirectCD, Nero's InCD, etc) are best used to permantly LOSE the data. Using RW data will cause the data to disappear faster. You do NOT have a "great-big floppy-disc".
  • Packet-Writing can be extremely fussy at best, insisting on the exact-same Operating System and Program Version that wrote it, in order to be readable - or simply refusing to be read for no reason at all
  • whereas commercial optical media have the data physically pressed into the metal, and R media have a dye "cooked" by the laser, in RW media the pits and lands are created by melting and re-crystalizing an aluminum alloy which promptly starts to de-crystalize, taking all the data with it
  • the desperation of threads reporting they can no longer read anything on their DVD-RW is generally even greater than the desperation of posters who cannot read the data on a CD-RW
If you are unwilling to use CD-R and a Sessions-based program (one that does not require formatting) to record the data (would replacing the data cost more than the 15 cents a blank CD-R costs by the spindle?), I'd suggest investing in a Flash drive (aka Jump / Pen / Thumb / Keychain drive).

Oh - I lost the 80% of the data on the Packet-Written CD-RW that wasn't also on the Hard Drive. Permantly.

Hi Lynn,

Thank you for your reply. I am not trying to read something from the DVD-RW that was written some time ago. I copied info that was on a CD-RW and all the data is present and readable, however, when I copy this info to my hard drive, change the attributes from Read-only to False, and then copy the resultant files to a DVD-RW, only the MS Office stuff remains Read-only. Everything else is editable. I have been copying my photo files to CD-RW for several years now and have not lost any data. I also keep my customer files on CD-RW and have not lost any of their information either. At this point, all I want to do is copy files that exist on several CD-RWs to DVD-RW because of technology changes and space requirements.

Thank you.

Ah, yes. I was warned by my software guru against using CD-RW OR formatting them, but I thought I knew more than she did. So I managed to learn the hard way.

You are free to do the same. Some happy day you will confidently put the CD-RW in the tray and be told the disc is blank. Or, the DVD/RW (plus or dash), as the case may be. At least with R media, the odds of recovering most of the data with a recovery program are a lot better.

In answering the same question elsewhere, I came up with the phrasing, "posters seem to be more frantic from people who have lost a few gig of data than from people who have lost around 750MB of data."

However, having been there and done that, I realize that isn't likely to be convincing until the data disappears.
