I have an internal and an external optical drive. Recently both Toast 6 and Popcorn 1 hang (display the spinning pizza of death) whenever I select 'disc copy'. It makes no difference which drive I use. If there is no disc in the drive, I can switch to 'disc copy', but as soon as I insert a disc, and it mounts in the Finder, then I get the SPOD again in Toast /Popcorn.

Try disconnecting the external drive and any other Firewire devices. Does the problem continue?
I'm just a fellow Toast-user so please don't blame Roxio for any misguidance I may provide. And do let me know if your issue gets solved. Cheers from Eugene, Oregon!

OK, just tried that. It made no difference to Toast; however, Popcorn wouldn't even launch (SPOD before the application window appeared). Now that I have reconnected the firewire drives it does at least launch, but the problem is back as well.

I'm suspicious that there is a Firewire problem at fault. Download from Apple the 10.4.8 or 10.3.9 (whichever System you're using) combined system updater. Run this updater on top of your existing system. Oftentimes running the combined updater fixes odd Firewire or USB issues.

Good thinking - but sadly not right. I just downloaded the 148MB combo updater, installed it, ran permissions - but the situation with Popcorn and Toast is exactly the same!

I'm pretty sure it's a communications problem but I don't know anything else to try. When the Copy window is entered Toast & Popcorn immediately seek information from the optical drive as to whether a disc is loaded. They aren't getting the info they are looking for. The fact that it doesn't matter whether your internal or external drive is selected by Toast before clicking the Copy window means this communication breakdown isn't due to a defective optical drive.

Have you tried creating a new User Account and running Toast or Popcorn from that account?

Thanks for your input on this issue.
I followed your suggestion with a new user account. The problem is exactly the same.

I'm having the very same problem with 10.4.8 (installed combo updater) and Toast Titanium 6.1.1.

I have a feeling it might be 10.4.8. It worked fine on my computer before I updated. It's working fine on my wife's computer running 10.4.2.

Anyone from Roxio know what's going on?

I agree it might be 10.4.8.  I also run same Toast on same G-5 computers and the one with 10.4.5 works; but the one with 10.4.8 fails.  I have found a tempary fix.  Reinstall Toast.  For me that gives me about 3 -5 more DVD burns before becoming hungup.

After a somewhat painful experience I have reinstalled 10.4.5  And, everything works wonderfully again.  I have burned over ten DVDs and no hang ups.
