I have Dell Laptop Latitude D510
with the dvd+-RW DW-Q58a that is an 8x drive with
the latest firmware updates...I spoke to dell and they decided
it was a bad drive..could it still be a media problem I am using 16x DVD=R
discs.  Roxio ejects the cd and tells me the disk is bad check for finger prints
or dry it

Actually the quoted speed on blank media is the fastest it will write at so an 8x drive should be able to handle 16x media.

Did you try a different brand to see if that helps, but then Dell may be correct in saying your drive is defunct
If it ain't broke, fiddle with it until it breaks, then fiddle with it until you get it fixed

Dell could be correct, but try this. Open the Roxio software in tools find DVDINFOPro open it and install a disc then click the info button on the top.  MID ( media ID ) should all be on that info page! Look for Available Write Descriptor. The DVDINFOPro program is asking the firmware from the drive what speeds it has in it's firmware for this media.
Next click the drive button at the top, your drive and firmware for the drive, are listed on the right.
