Product Activation? Just curious what this is all about

Nowhere did I see this mentioned anywhere except here in this forum.
Ok, now that I know this and have that feeling of almost being 'rooked', lets move onward and upward
So, is it correct to say that if I buy Roxio 9, then I will have to do product activation in order get the software to work.
What it is that I am concerned about,
==========================
1. - What happens when I buy another computer, then this would mean that I would have to purchase another copy of Roxio 9??
2. - What happens if my computer crashes, and I have to re-install it from scratch?
Could someone please enlighten me please? How exactly does this work.
I currently own Roxio 5, and Roxio 6. But if this product activation in version 9 is seriously annoying, I'll look at other options like Nero.

We are fellow users like you. I guess you will have to be the one who determines whether or not the product activation is seriously annoying. Did you activate Windows XP, or are you running some other OS?

uh... I don't know where you looked but I do find product activation listed on System Requirement page.
http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/creator/...quirements.html
"Import, capture, editing, copying, burning, export, or viewing MPEG-2 files, DVD-Video titles or HD-V video, and burning of DVD, mini DVD or SVCD discs requires a one-time product activation via the Internet. Product activation is fast, free and anonymous."
I also checked the box for EMC 9... the same information is printed on the side of the box...
maybe they should place it on the front of the box and the main page of Roxio website so it's more visible for everyone...

2: No problem. You can uninstall/reinstall as much as you like, but registration/activation could be triggered again. Just use the SAME email address and name each time and you shouldn't have a problem.

Not everyone runs out the software store every week to get the latest version. I'm running software that I purchased from years ago. Some of the companies are out of business, but their software remains in use by me even today. Is the Roxio 9 activation server going to be running, even after the company is out of business?
Seriously annoying: Example: Volume Logic Winamp Plugin
When you buy this program, you are really buying 3 product activations and that is *IT*! Nowhere are you told that this product requires product activation. I tend to keep the software I buy for quite a while between upgrades (EG: I am a legitimate customer using Roxio 5, and am still using legitimate Roxio 6!). I've upgraded and or rebuilt my system 4 times. Now the Volume Logic program I paid $$$ for is now totally useless to me due to product activation.
When 'Esellerate' (the product activation used by Volume Logic) finally drops their support for volume logic (No they are not going to keep product activation running forever for free), then again the 'legitimate customers' lose out.
GETTING BACK TO ROXIO 9,
Is Roxio planning on keeping the ROXIO 9 activation server up and running forever?
The existence of the "Activation" forum proves my point. I see lots of people running Internet Explorer 7 having to rip their machines apart in order to get the software to activate in the first place. So Roxio's product activation is essentially 'botched job' causing many many many legitimate customers problems.
Again, who is paying the price? - You guessed it, it is the 'legitimate customers' that are paying the price.
So Roxio 9 doesn't like Internet 7.. Hmmm... I wonder how Roxio 9 is going to behave on Internet Explorer 8, 9 or 10? What about the different patches? Which IE patch is going to break Roxio 9's product activation this week?
Microsoft is releasing literally thousands over versions of their broken web browser each week (each update being a different version). Why would anyone want to integrate their software into the bug ridden, unsecure, ever changing platform as Internet Explorer??? Wouldn't it be smarter for the Roxio Developers to integrate the product activation into their product?? Come on Roxio, it can't be that hard to call winsock from a program?? It would simplify testing, and make a far more stabler product.
On my system's I have deleted/disabled 'internet explorer' off the system. It cuts down on the number of problems I have on my desktop greatly. I can surf the net and avoid all the broken IE browser security vulnerabilities that allow worms and other issues into my desktops. Therefore, if I were to buy this product I have a high probability of being one of the many 'legitimate' unhappy customers writing reviews. (See Amazon.com).
So product activation is supposed to cut back on software piracy and increase company profits. Roxio needs to figure out that you increase company profits by turning out a Good Quality Product that works and doesn't cause 'legitimate' users problems, but instead causes illegitimate users problems. Roxio, you appear to have gotten it backwards!!!
I can only speak for myself in this case. In My Humble Opinion, I would call this seriously annoying??

Seriously, no one likes activation but it's a sad fact of digital life. Will someone create a way to get around program activation? I guess. My 2 cents is that Roxio has been in business for a long time in computer years so I think you're safe in plopping down your dough and getting years of use out of it.

Activation is something you'll just have to get used to. More companies do or will be using it because of piracy. Microsoft even connects the OS now to the hardware in your computer. So will Microsoft be in business 20 yrs from now? Who knows, but most likely you won't be using WinXP either. When you purchase software, you are NOT 'buying' it. You are only licensed to use it. It wouldn't surprse me if older 16bit doesn't run at all under Vista. At some point, the industry must move forward and stop supporting older hardware and software no matter how many people still use it. As far as I'm concerned, Vista should have been 100% 64bit with no 32bit support.
A lot of companies embed IE into their software. Intuit is well know for this and yes, so does EMC9. If you don't like that fact, then there are other choices on the market.

This is a pre-sale thread generally discussing the question of activation.
Your particular problem of an activation malfunction is off topic in this thread. Please take it to the Activation forum.
