DVD not working

When I start up my computer the light comes on for the DVD RW, so I know it still is doing something, but I can not get the tray to open when I push on the button or trying to eject the tray for that drive under My Computer. When I enter Roxio Creator 8 Suite, it displays my Philips DVDRW DL (E:) under the Destination Selection, which is correct, but I can’t get it open to use.
When I installed the EMC 8 I was prompted to remove a couple of things, one of which was the Sonic DLA, but I do not remember what the other program was called. I am little leery about uninstalling and then installing again, after reading some of the other posts and the further problems the people encountered. I pretty much purchased this software to run back ups for important programs to DVD, the other stuff really isn’t that important on this work computer and I haven’t even tried to use.
I tried getting help from the live chat on the Roxio site, but the one guy I encountered was not even paying attention to what I was explaining, because he would come back with a question that I had already wrote about; finally he disconnected our conversation and just disappeared. In looking through past posts it appears that I am not alone in my poor view of their live chat help.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Go into Device Manager and uninstall that burner. Reboot, and see if it works properly.
Also, if you have Drag to Disc running in the tray, disable it. I never install packet writing software. If you get your burner to work again, use Creator Classic to back up your important data.

Grandpabruce,
Thanks for the suggestion. I did uninstall the burner, but I am still not able to open up the tray. The burner is basically the same as before. I am not sure if I have Drag to Disc running in the tray, how would I check on this?
I was also wondering about a couple of other options.
1. Would it make sense to close down all the programs that automatically start up when I turn on my computer? I looked them up and there is about 25 programs, I just want to make sure I don’t disable some program that I need to have running. I remember when I installed software on some of my old computers I would shut down everything but systray and explorer; and then install the new software. I am running Windows XP professional and like I mentioned before the light does come on when I start up, so something is not finishing after that point.
2. The other thing I was thinking about is uninstalling EMC 8 and then seeing if the drive will work again before I re-install. My main concern is that I might mess up something else, or should I say the software might mess up something else, if I were to try this procedure.
Thanks again for the help,

Thanks again for the help,
Do you see a slug of icons where you clock and speaker icons are? That is what I mean by tray. If you see many down there, disable the ones you don't need via msconfig.
Click on Start, then Run. In the Run box, type in msconfig. When the next screen comes up, click on the startup tab. It is there that you uncheck most of what you have checked. Click apply, then ok. Reboot your computer, and put a check in the box in the lower left corner of the screen that pops up when you get into Windows. That box won't show again when you restart your computer.

Grandpabruce,
I went through and disabled all but five files through the start up tab. FYI the five I left were, ATI Control Panel – atiptaxx.exe, Soundblaster file – CTXysVol.exe, Symantec Shared File - ccApp.exe, Norton Internet Security – UrlLstCk.exe, & Messenger – msmsgs.exe. I left these open because I figured they wouldn’t have anything to do with the DVD RW drive, if you think I should close any of these out please let me know. I then uninstalled the drive and restarted the computer numerous times, trying different things each time, like running the pxengine1_08_34a patch, manually opening the drive tray, to see if it might make the tray close, but it did not. Nothing I tried seemed to make any difference, the drive still does not respond.
I never did see anything about Drag to Disc in under the startup area, the only thing I saw about Roxio was RoxWatchtray.
What would be your next step?
Thanks
Matt

Bruce is probably out fishing but should be back later this afternoon.
In xp click start, right click my computer, click properties. A system properties window opens. Click the hardware tab, click device manager. At the top of this window click view, make sure a dot is next to review devices by type. Now click the + next to DVD/CD-Rom drives. Do you see any yellow exclamation marks? Right click the drive-drives and click properties. A window opens click the details tab, mine shows Px716A_______1.09. Please tell us what yours says?
Now go to start, programs, accesories, system tools, system information. Click the + next to components, then click CD-Rom. Here it should list your drives. Look half way down for ststus, does it say OK?

Cdanteek,
Here is what I found out regarding your questions.
1. There is no yellow exclamation mark next to DVD/CD-Rom drive, but I want to make sure we are on the same page, because when I followed your directions and opened Device Manager and then opened View, the dot was next to Devices by Type, there was not one called Review Devices by Type.
2. My details tab shows
IDE\CDROMPHILIPS_DVD+-RW_DVD8631_________________BD10____\594D5730303735363037353134394F4330303535
3. The status for the Philips drive says OK.
After my last posting I once again went to the Live Chat and got a person that directed me to a “Clean Installation of Easy Media Creator 8 or 9” web page Roxio has in their Knowledgebase section. Basically, I was to download the “Installer Clean Up Utility”, run this program and it would remove all the Roxio and Sonic software on my computer. I have not done this yet because I was wondering if this was a good idea. I thought I had read on this forum that some people had some trouble with something like this, so I just wanted to get some input before I tried this utility.
Thanks,
Matt

Dell computer? Lots of problems with this burner.
You need to cleanup the PC. Use the installer cleanup utility. Google programs in start all programs find out what they are. Sonic DLA is like Roxio D2D big problems running both.
Is that the newest firmware? From Dell?
