Cannot read DVD in XP

I have moved an internal LaCie DVD RAM that was bundled with EMC 7.1.0.136 from a Windows 2000 PC to a Dell with XP SP2. The Dell had a bog-standard CD ROM installed previously
I installed the DVD and then installed EMC. It will not read a DVD now. Shows the DVD drive icon, but when you double-click it, Explorer hangs a long time, and then crashes
I have seen a message concerning WMI, but don't know what that is
It's obviously a hardware error, but I am stuck now
Anybody know what's going on?
Many thanks,
Brian

Hi,
Well, there's only one drive on the cable, the DVD, and it's set correctly as Cable Select (I
suppose I could try single master)
Dell Optiplex GX280, Win XP with SP2, BIOS up to date
Checked the BIOS, and it shows up as the correct DVD name
Uninstalled the DVD from Device Manager, and rebooted, came up OK
Reinstalled EMC 7.1.0.136 - installation went OK
When I put a CD or DVD in the drive, and browse with Explorer, Explorer just hangs
and then crashes with a "Send to Microsoft" message of AppName: explorer.exe,
ModName aiicon.dll, which is an Adobe DLL (huh?)
Looking in event log, and following through the error ID doesn't tell me much, as well
Aaargh!

Did you pin the LaCie to cable select? Dell does use cable select and the IDE cable that came with the pc is a cable select cable. It probably is a 40 pin 40 wire cable if a CDDVD-Rom was connected to it. Get a 40 pin 80 wire IDE cable for the DVD burner and make it master, I assume it's on the secondary IDE channel?
Do you have D2D installed in that version? If so start, run ,msconfig, and uncheck startup for D2D.

Thanks for the reply. Concerning D2D, do you mean DirectCD?
If so, I'll turn it off

The name of the Packet-Writing program was changed with Version 6!
What Version are you running? I suspect this is on the wrong Forum, and you are trying to use either ECDC 5 (MAY be coaxed to run with WinXP, but may not, and is NOT supported) or ECDC 4 (which doesn't work with WinXP AT ALL).
