Yes, I understand it's Veterans' Day in the US. I don't know what it's called in Canada, but it's called Armistice Day here, celebrating the end of the great war and the efforts of all the country's servicemen from then right up until now. It's a big day in Australia and New Zealand.

Most people (including the servicemen and women themselves) are against war, but regardless of politics or how unwise or unpopular the war is, reasonable people should honor the brave men and women who gave up so much to answer their country's call.

Unfortunately, the day is turning out to be just another Holiday where people may get a day off from work. Many do not even think about what the day is trying to commemorate. Here in Houston area, there are five (really three) events including the annual parade.

Many of the posters are vets - we thank you for your service.

In Canada November 11th is called Rememberance Day. It was originally called Armistice Day from 1918 to 1931  when an act of Parliament was passed to change it to Remberance Day.

On this day we commemorate the Canadians who died in WW1, WW2 and Korea.

The Poppy is the symbol of Rememberance Day and is distributed by the Royal Candian Legion (which I am a proud member of).

On the 11th, members of our legion (and all across Canada) form up at the Legion Branch and march to church for a service, then parade to the Cenotaph for a ceremony and service including the laying of wreaths at the base of the cenotaph at 11am.

In WW1 -  66,000  Canadians died  .....   620,000 served
    WW2 - 45,000                          .....  1,000,000 served
    Korean War -  516                      ....    26,000   served

THEY SHALL GROW NOT OLD AS WE
THAT ARE LEFT GROW OLD;
AGE SHALL NOT  WEARY THEM NOR
THE YEARS CONDEMN.
AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN
AND IN  THE MORNING,
WE WILL REMEMBER THEM

BBC story -

Quote

The red poppy worn around the world in remembrance of battlefield deaths has nothing to do with the blood shed in the brutal clashes of World War I.

Instead it symbolises the wild flowers that were the first plants to grow in the churned-up soil of soldiers' graves in Belgium and northern France. Little else could grow in the blasted soil that became rich in lime from the rubble.

Their paper-thin red petals were the first signs of life and renewal, and in 1915 inspired Canadian doctor John McCrae to pen perhaps the most famous wartime poem:

Quote

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row...
It was this poem which inspired an American war secretary to sell the first poppies to raise money for ex-soldiers.

Being a fromer military myself, tho I never served on a battle field, I still have vivid memories of many of my former platoon members. Since then, I always have special memories and thoughts for all military personel <Climb on Soap Box> that have to do the dirty job that politicians cannot do. <Get off soap box> They do the job they are asked to do even when they do not agree with it or the reasons for it. They do it proudly because they serve their country with valiance and honour, and because their country asked them.

I have a friend who is in special ops, and has been on the line of fire many a time in his career. He was shot more times he can remember, almost died once, but is always ready and willing to do what he is called to do. He is my personal heroe. :)

So, yes, veterants do deserve our respect and support, especially those that are serving now in these difficult and trying times that many countries are facing....

I bow my head respectfully to all those who serve and have served over the generations....

S.
