Old UFD-Reader Installation Program from DirectCD Clashes with XP. How do I remove it? I have a problem with Easy CD's DirectCD

Hello,

I use Windows XP. This version of windows seems to have it's own CD-RW (UDF) Reader and/or writer.

What happened was, I have put someone's old CD-RW into my computer's CD-ROM drive.

This CD-RW was formatted using DirectCD.

As you probably remember, when you put such a CD-RW into a computer on which DirectCD isn't installed, the CD-RW installs the little program program called UDF-Reader onto the computer in order to make it able to read the DirectCD formatted CD-RW. (Windows-XP asks permission first, but Being in a hurry, I gave this permission)

This UDF-Reader Program of course clashes with Windows-XP's own CD-RW reading and writing program.

Now, every time I startup my computer, Windows opens a little text-ballon telling me it had to refuse the loading this DirectCD program into the memory because it is in conflict with Windows and this might crash the system.

Everything works fine, but how do I remove this ancient program and keep it from loading every time?

I removed everything from the register with the name DirectCD and UDF (if XP wasn't mentioned), but still it tries to load on startup.

I tried, using my original Windows-XP CD-ROM, to repair Windows, but this 'repair' option isn't there. I can only install Windows complete and this also doesn't work, because it isn't a newer version than the one on my computer, of course.

What must I do to fix this? How do I remove this ancient program?

I guess you looked in Add/Remove Programs?

Rollback would have been another option.

You might want to check in Programs – Startup to see if it is listed.

Another option would be Start – Run – msconfig, Startup Tab. Go through the list and see if something like UDFReader is listed. Un-check it.

Also look for Adaptec in add/remove (and uninstall if found).

Robert1701,

If those suggestions don't fix things for you, look for and delete any of cdr4vsd.vxd; cdralvsd.vxd; cdudf.vxd; cdudfrw.vxd; or udfreadr.vxd if you can find them. Reboot and see if your problem has gone.

Thank for the tips everyone, but still no go.

I've searched for the following files, but I can't find any of them:
cdr4vsd.vxd
cdralvsd.vxd
cdudf.vxd
cdudfrw.vxd
udfreadr.vxd

The old UDF-Reader program can't be found in the Add/Remove Software list eigther.

I already looked for it in the startup list using msconfig and other utilities I downloaded from the net.

I already removed everything I could find with the name adaptec and directcd and udf-reader if XP wasn't mentioned in the name or description.

This stupid 'plugin' program is imbedded somewhere in Windows and I don't know where to look for it elsewhere. I'm not a Windows computer expert.

Starting from scratch, formatting the harddisk and installing Windows again would be too much work. I have installed too much programs on my computer.

This is probably is the reason why since a month or so, my computer got so very slow (logged in with my main account).
I don't know when it happened, maybe after an upgrade from AntiVir or so?
When I login under my other account (using the minimum of programs), my computer is still as fast as before.

I already scanned my computer with an antivirus and antispyware programs and with the scanner from microsoft itself. Nothing is found. Everything OK. But still my computer feels like an old Pentium I, although it's a Pentium IV, 2,60GHz.

The list Brendon gave is the complete list of the program and files associated with the Reader.

I have some of them on a Win98 PC but it doesn't run, so I am guessing they are leftovers.

I would also browse through the other tabs in msconfig and see if any of these are listed. – Not even sure if Roxizap would get the offending file…

I'll do some more digging and see what comes up.

One other thing. If your PC is bogging down, it is not because of a program that XP won't let run. That is another problem…

Once upon a time I installed an old OEM version of Easy CD Creator and DirectCD, which came with one of the CD-ROM writers I bought, but I already removed everything I could find.
This little udf-reader program which was automatically copied from the old CD-RW, is a sticky little bastard.

I can't find anything which is related to adaptec or directcd anymore.

I would not know where to look any further.

If only I had a utility which diagnoses the whole system and If I could make sense of it any way.

Before making the stap to the 'PC', I used an other platform. In those days I had such utilities.
They monitored the whole system. Every little thing which happened was displayed in detail in a list.

Yes, indead. An other problem I need to resolve somehow, as soon as possible.
I even have to wait a little while to get the popup menu when I right-click the mouse!

It's worth looking for any of that string of files I mentioned, only with the .SYS extension if you didn't find any with the old .VXD.

I have some other 'must-do' items on my agenda, but when I've done them I'll check back here and if necessary I can go and try to duplicate your problem on my system to see what files do it.

Hi Robert,

I just went and had a play for a couple of hours. It was very educational. :)

Direct CD discs from ECDC version 4 and 5 just read nicely when I put them into a clean install of Windows XP with SP-2. I had to kill the Windows XP UDF reader to get any reaction.

The 'native' UDFreader in XP is udfs.sys. It lives in \Windows\System32\Drivers. When I killed it off and inserted a direct CD disc of either flavor (v4 or v5) the disc offered to install the UDFreader.

In each case a file called udfreadr.sys was installed in \Windows\System32\Drivers. The size depended on the version. There was also a file called udfrunin.exe installed in \Windows\System32.

Those two are the only files which I could find that a Direct CD disc would install into Windows XP. They don't exist in a normal XP system so it should be quite safe to delete them.

I have no idea why the native XP reader, udfs.sys is/was not working on your machine. It should have just displayed the contents of the Direct CD disc, which should not have had a chance to install the reader. But Hey, that's Windows.

Hope this helped.

Brendon, you're my hero.

I found the 2 files and removed them.

The executable file had even an icon with a red cross over it, showing the executable isn't loaded in the memory:

Now when I startup my computer, windows does not try to load the executable file and I'm rid of the annoying textballoon.

Thank you everyone for answering my posting.

Guys,
I have been struggling with an error message of "DirectCD will cause Windows to become unstable..." for months now. No one has been able to resolve this even though I've fully uninstalled ALL Roxio products and also ran Roxizap multiple times. I read through this topic and discovered the same issue with udfrunin.exe (with the same red X over the file) and udfreadr.sys as Robert had. THIS FINALLY FIXED MY PROBLEM and I no longer get the error everytime I reboot.

Wish me luck reinstalling Creator 8.

THANKS A MILLION!! :)

You can't beat actually being a user of the program when you give advice on it. You need hands on.
