I hope you meant you were stumped! Stomped usually means you badly underestimated your opponent…
First thing is prove the camcorder and cables. Hook them up to a TV or even a Stereo and make sure you are getting signal out of both the Red and White audio cables from the camcorder.
Then you need to somehow check the Plextor device. I have never seen one, can it be hooked up to a stereo or TV for its' output?
One more test, after these, would be to capture using MS Movie Maker.
I have a similar issue with my old Sony video camera because of the way the audio signal is captured originally. I only get one channel sound but there is a rather easy fix.
If you have captured the video and it is on your computer, open Media Manager and navigate to that file. Right click to extract the audio and save it. Open Sound Editor and put that sound file in it. Only one channel will show. Now use the following.instructions from the help menu.(Bolded and below)
When you go to edit your video in VideoWave, add the original file and then mute the native audio. Add the modified audio file to the music track. That should give you the sound out of both channels. You can also slightly adjust the location of the audio file in case it doesn't line up.
Changing the channels of a stereo signal
You can modify the channels of a stereo signal—flipping channels, playing only the right channel or the left channel, or playing either the right channel or the left channel on both channels. You might want to use this feature if
- your audio clip only contains one recorded channel, but it is not a mono recording. You might want to play the single channel on both the right and left channels.
.
To change the channels of a stereo (note added or a one channels sound) signal:
- In the Project View area, right-click the audio clip for which you want to change the channels, and choose Clip Properties.
- In the Clip Properties dialog box, click Channel control, and choose an option. The options allow you to determine how the left and right stereo channels are played back.
