When I try to install the program, before the progress bar begins, my computer crashes and I get a message that the computer recovered from a serious error. I'm installing the program on a new HP computer with dual Athlon processor.

My first suspect would be that there is some anti-malware (antivirus, firewall, anti-spam) software that is preventing the installation from doing what it needs to. Start with disabling any of those apps and then let us know if you are still stuck.
