Yes it specifically lists DVD-R DL among others. It is a Sony DW-Q30A. When I look at the drive in the Home Screen, it also shows DVD-R DL as an option on the properties of the drive. I just can't get it as a selection in the Disk Copier screen.

I had the same problem. I read the readme file that came with the install and under known issues it sated that DVD-R DL cannot be used for copying video DVDs or video compulations.

but the other day i was coping my wedding video from my hard drive to a DVD-R and had to do 6 copies so set disc copier to do the 6 copies and after it had finished the first one it asked for a blank media and in the box of alternatives it listed DVD-R DL so i put one in a DVD-R DL and it burned it ok.
BUT after i had finnished i re opened disc copier inserted a blank DVD-R DL and went to copy my wedding video again and it rejected the disk and a list comes up with acceptable media and it lists DVD+R DL but not -R DL?????
Maby somebody from roxio may read this and have an answer but seeing some of the comments made elsware in the forums i won't hold my breath of ever getting a reply from them as they have not answered any of my 18 tickets i have placed with them since OCT/NOV.

On the other hand I can use -R DL media with other programs I have and they work O.K. So I guess it's just EMC that won't allow the -R DL media, rather than the drive
.
The Sony DRU-720A shows the following media that it can record to:
+R
DVD+R DL 4x
DVD+R 16X----DVD+RW 8X
-R
DVD-R 16X----DVD-RW 6X
DVD-ROM 16X---CD-R 48X---CD-RW 24X---CD-ROM 48X

You should check the Sony website to see what brand of -DL media is recommended or has been tested with that particular drive. It could be something as simple as using the that media.
---------
System 2: HP DV7 laptop, Turion II Dual Core 2.4Ghz, 4GB RAM, 640GB hard drive, ATI Mobility HD4650, ATI HiDef Audio, Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.

Anyway, it sure won't work with EMC 7.x And you are correct in suggesting that on page 21 of the manual it doesn't show it either. As ggrussell suggests, I have the latest firmware up date for the DRU-720A and after having it for some time now, I pretty much know what it can and can't do with all of the programs I use it with.
Point taken however, cdanteek.

As an example, I have tried many different types of brand name media and some won't burn in my drives while others burn every time. Not necessarily knocking Memorex, but I have never got them to burn right. The speeds that the media manufacturers advertise is also another quandry. Some media is advertised at a certain speed and the burner manufacturer advertises that it can burn at that speed but when you put the two together, they don't come close to that. Example: I have some TDK DVD+R and TDK-R that are advertised at 8X. My Sony DRU-720A spec's says it can burn those at 8X-CAV read and 8X-P-CAV write and 8X-CAV read and 8X-P-CAV write. However, they don't come close to that. They write at about 1.2 to 1.7 X. And That's when I have the program being used set at the highest speed available. So go figure !
I'm not intending to be argumentative at all, but rather discuss what I have expierenced.
I'm curious about the original posters statement that the Sony DW-Q30A specifically states it can burn DVD-R DL. I was not aware of that. I wonder what Sony did to that drive so they could advertise being able to burn DVD-R DL media ?? Any ideas ?

Other personal info: I have a small home office company (Digital Data Save) that takes some small local companies Hard copies (which build up to many card board boxes full of extranious forms etc.) and scan them, create logical names for each and then burn all of the files to CD for them. Gets rid of a lot of old forms and saves them a lot of space to boot. I'm starting to get away from that now as I think I killed my own business by showing most of them what hardware and software to buy and then gave them a few complimentary lessons on how to make it all work. So now they are doing for themselves what I used to do for them.
Well, after the word got around that I built custom computers (desktops, Windows operating systems and Intel processors only) I started getting a few orders for new computers. Now I'm even getting tired of that so now I am pretty much just doing my own kind of stuff and having fun with all these Roxio software programs and getting acquainted with some real nice dudes (Gurus) that frequent this forum. I am a retired professional Civil Engineer and now just do most all this as a hobby and have fun.
I use Asus products exclusively as far as the MB's then purchase most all of the other hardware from NewEgg.com based on whatever suits the customer.
The computers I use as my personal computers I have also custom built. So far they have all been pretty reliable and have had practically no problems with them or the ones I built for others. I just don't believe all the hype regarding SATA drives in a RAID configuration, especially "mirrored". There is some good and bad and I really don't think that with that configuration, that it's all that much faster anyway. I guess it's hard to get me away from the old school !! As most reliable tech's will tell you doing some good house cleaning on your computer and probably adding more RAM will be as good as a couple of SATA HD's. Although there are others that totally disagree with me. But that's O.K. as long as the people I build computers for are totally happy campers.
Thanks for the come back and information about the Sony optical drives.
Cheers

The 50GB WOW would be BD for Blue Ray Disc.
Asus I like and have had no problems building systems on them.
Newegg used to be great but prices have gone up and shipping has got slower. Price compare at Mwave, TigerDirext, ZipZoomFly, and others!
I use a SATA Raid Strip aray 2 80GB Maxtors for video encoding and believe the HYPE. I have a 80GB on a via 133 and 40GB on IDE. Now if I run transfer tests on these drives. I get 45x on ide, 52x on via 133, and 63x on the SATA Raid Strip Aray.
Now with SATA2, seek times and the fact that they will tend to have a larger cached buffer, maxtor for example at 16MB, as opposed to the 8MB. Seek times will be generally faster usually -8 or -9 ms. There will be a general speed increase but it will mainly be an overall one. Those who will see the benefits more than others will be, video editors, some gamers and cad users, simply because the information is more speedily available.
You have the board and the Ram. The slowest link here are the hard drives.
So if you would like to see a performance increase go with SATA2 hard drives in a raid strip aray.
A good house cleaning and another Gig of Ram won't do much. I have been there done that.
