After installing EMC 9.0, the usual blank DVD (Verbatim DVD+R 16x) now only registered as having only 4.07 free disc space when I used to be able to burn up to 4.38G. It is in UDF 2.0 format. My laptop has my old EMC 7.0 version and it showed 4.38G free space with CDUDF format. I would appreciate any help on this. I am inclined to remove the EMC 9.0 and reinstall EMC 7.0. Thank you in advance.
My computer: Dell D4600, Win XP home, 1G RAM, P4 2.66G with NEC ND3520A DVD burner firmware 3.07

Are you by any chance looking at the disc capacity, through the packet writing D2D application?

Cdanteek,
Thank you for the reply.  I am referring to the window disc property.  It registered my blank DVD as used space of 313MB and free space of 4.07G when I have not written anything on it.  I have tried this on several blank disc.   Apparently it is a bug w/ the recent MS update along w/ Roxio EMC 9.0 version from reading other similar threads on this forum.  Howver, at this time I still can't resolve this problem.
Any suggestions?  What is D2D application you are referring to?
Thanks!

He is referring to Drag to Disc. If you use that utility to format a disc that is about the space formatting takes up. The clue would be that the File System would read as UDF in XP explorer instead or RAW. RAW is what it will report for a blank disc.

The UDF 2.0 indicates that you used D2D to format these disc, as V9 D2D defaults to UDF 2.0.

If these are +R discs as you indicated, they cannot be used for any application now, except for data Packet Writing by D2D.

If they were RW you could at least erase them.

James,
I am glad you have identified my problem.  How do I convert D2D to RAW as default so I can use D2D option and store up to 4.38G.  At this time, every time I inserted my blank DVD it default to UDF2.0 and a blank window screen popped up.  I would appreciate your advice.

plummer,

You need to read the manual help files! You have to get a basic understanding of the software.

Thank you for forwarding the manual link to me.  After reading through it I still can't find the solution for my problem.  Every time I inserted a blank DVD disk onto my DVD burner the  D2D automatically kicked in and formated my disk with window file system popped up designating my disk has only 4.07G free space with 313MB used space.  I have my kids backed up dvd that I wanted to burn onto the DVD and due to 4.07G free space I can no longer burning it onto my DVD using D2D feature.  The question I have is if I can config D2D option onto RAW data or other format so I can have my usual 4.7G free space as when I was using EMC 7.0?  If not can I "deactivate" the D2D option so it does not format my disc automatically. Appreciate input.

Plummer, uninstall Drag to Disc through Add/Remove Programs.  I believe that it is separate from the rest of EMC 9.

To stop D2D from formatting, Right click the D2D icon in the Systray and select Options.

In the Options screen, go to the Advanced Options and clear all of the checkmarks. OK your way out and you will probably have to reboot for these to go into effect.

To completely eliminate D2D, you can uninstall it through the Control Panel – Add/Remove Programs.

Alternately, to have it available but not loading at startup, use Start – Run – msconfig. Under the Startup tab, remove the checkmark by D2D. Next time you boot you will see a warning screen. Put a check in the 'Don't bother me again' box and click OK.

Another alternative, if D2D is running, is to Right click the icon in the Systray and select "Exit D2D". This stops the program but it can be restarted if needed.

As for the media you have formatted, as I mentioned, the only type of media you could recover would be RW media, which can be erased. R media is gone… You can use D2D to put data on it and Finalize it when it is near full. Or just pitch it and be done with it.

D2D, like all packet writers, offers the appearance of working like a big floppy. The price for that has been reliability. They fail without warning leaving you with an unreadable disc.

In my opinion, it is great for transferring files between 2 PCs when no other means of transfer exists. It should never be used to hold the only copy of anything you value!
