force movie to wide screen

I have an mpg movie whose content is widescreen but displays in 4:3, all the figures are tall and thin. if i take it into videowave widescreen it puts black bars down the side. can i force it to widescreen?

As a starter, please describe the source or how the mpg movie was created/captured. If you play it using Windows Media Player, does it show as widescreen at all? What version of EMC8 do you have (Suite or Deluxe)?
