Hey folks, I recently dropped Trend Micro because of all the problems it created with my ROXIO configuration.  I am now using ZoneAlarm and everything works great.  However, everytime I fire up ROXIO (VideoWave, MyDVD), ROXIO tries to access the internet.  Can anyone explain this to me?  Is ROXIO trying to follow your patterns or use of the software?

I deny ROXIO from accessing the web and there are no issues.  However, I am just curious about this subject matter.  Does anyone have input???

Thanks

There could be several reasons that the program is trying to access the web but I don't think it is trying to look at your use patterns.  I heard somewhere that many companies use users boards like this to see patterns and problems.

The most likely reason is that the program is set to look for updates.  You can change with from the Home page.  Look down to the right and click options, uncheck the update one.

The program may be accessing the music database.  You will see the icon in the upper left.  You can disable that options from the same options box.

You computer/router may be trying to use the UPNP connection for Live Share. This is where you can share the images on your computer with friends.  Essentially you computer acts like a server for the images you want to share.  If you have this running it can be shut off via Media Manager.

I don't know if this is true for V8 but in V7, Media Manager searched your computer to catalog your media files.  It looked like it was going out to the web but it just used that sort of display to show the search.

There are probably others.  In V9, there are some activation requirements which will keep popping up until you activate.  Not an issue here but I though that I would throw it in.

What is the address that you are seeing when the program starts to access the web?  Zone Alarm should be able to give you information on where the computer is trying to go.

A poster in V9 also indicated that his program also kept going to the web. The poster tried 'everything' and couldn't stop it so .....
Regardless of what I say about computer maintenance, there is no need to defrag a solid state hard drive.

sknis,
shouldn't telling or setting a good firewall and have it tell Roxio no. Then instruct the firewall not to show me this anymore, cure the problem?

That would work :)

I just remembered that the "Welcome" screen does have an area that provides sales update information. Right now, it has an ad for EMC 9.   If that is it then your suggestion is the right fix. I forgot all about that until just now.
