Whenever I add an audio track to a video production it is very distorted in playback. The source audio plays back fine. I've tried adjusting the volume in the production to no avail.

As a guess, you audio is on the motherboard, and not a separate card?  If so, check for newer drivers, which will often solve the problem.  Also, if you go ahead and render your project and write it to DVD, it'll probably play back fine from the disc.

Hope that helps!

In additon to what D-W said, you can probably fix the situation by doing the following:

In Start/Run, type in dxdiag. When it opens, click on the Sound tab, and move the Hardware Sound Acceleration slider, to the left, a few notches. Exit dxdiag, and check your sound, in VideoWave, again. If it is okay, update the drivers for your sound card, and see if it still sounds okay in VideoWave. If it does, go back to dxdiag, and move the slider all the way back to the right. Exit dixdiag, and check sound in VideoWave, again. If it is okay, you are good to go.
Life is good!
