This is really frustrating.  I haven't been able to burn a single DVD successfully.  I've tried 4 disks so far.  It looks like the program burns approx 1.6 GB and then it just stops running, even though the progress meter still moves the drive is doing nothing.  Eventually the program times out and it looks like the burn finished but it hasn't.  The sad thing is that my first burn I didn't notice this and I've lost some data when it looked like I was safe to delete data from my hard drive  :)

The writing itself seems to be really slow.  I'm trying to create a Data Disk using the new interface (not classic).  It seems to stutter a bit and the drive spins up and down a few times.  Then it starts writing for real.  The write dialog says the write speed starts off slow and eventually maxes out at 4x, while the maximum speed of the drive is 8x.

I've already uninstalled and reinstalled the program several times.  I'm seriously thinking of going back to Nero.

What new interface are you talking about.  Creator Classic is rock solid for burning data.  You don't need to use any Wizards in the suite.

Update the firmware for your burner.

Instead of starting from the Home, go through Start – All Programs – Roxio~~~ Data – Classic.

That should put you in Classic for sure. Might want to try some RW media until you get that burner under control. Like GPB, I think your problems are in the hardware and not the program.

James, I'm just wondering why you and others always recommend using Creator Classic for normal (i.e. session-based) burning? I always use "Home", which is basically RecordNow as I understand. I did not have any single problem with it, except maybe that "Add Data" button split to "Add Files" (which only allows you to select files) and "Add Folder" (which allows to select a single folder) is just stupid and completely useless. I usually use Windows Explorer to select and copy files and folders which I want to write to a disc, then use "Paste" option in "Home". The way this button worked in RecordNow 7.5 was much better (I had RecordNow 7.5 preinstalled on my notebook). Other than that, RecordNow ("Home") works perfectly for me.

I recommend Creator Classic because it has been rock solid in every version of the Roxio software that I have used, back to version 4.

My drive is a Sony DVD+-RW DW-Q58A.  I checked the Sony site and there isn't any new firmware for my drive.  I'll give Classic another shot.  Btw, this is a brand new Dell Inspiron laptop so I haven't attempted to burn anything until I bought the new Roxio 9.

I agree...I have not been able to get this software to burn anything!  It will generate any project but fails top burn a DVD or a CD.

I have not had much luck with NERO either.  I'm going back to a Mac!

If you're having problems with two totally different suites - I'd suggest you look elsewhere - check the drive itself or the OS for anything that may be causing the problem.

The fact that both Roxio and Nero are having problems would suggest that it's not down to the programs but must lie elsewhere

Nope.  No joy.  Running Classic, it looks like it's working but when I turn the DVD over I can see 2 distinct areas.  It looks like half the disk got written. when I should have recolored most of the disk.  Thank goodness disks are cheap.....  I also tried upgrading to the latest PX Engine 3.00.58a (per an article on the support home page).  At least this time it looked like it got to the max speed.

I guess I'm SOL for now.  No patches from Roxio or Sony.  Maybe I'll give Nero a shot.

Try updating the firmware for your burner.  What you described is a problem with how the burner is burning to the DVD.

Sigh....I think you're right.  I ran out to the store today to get some DVD+R to test against and I saw some warning labels on them.  They said that 16X disks needed a firmware upgrade.  WHY THE HECK DIDN'T MY DISKS SAY THAT??!?!?  So I bought a small pack of low end disks and tried them out.  I finally (after 7 disks and some lost data) got a successful burn....

Unfortunately, I have looked for new firmware and not found anything.  Sigh....guess I'll just have to keep my eyes open and constantly Google for it.

Thanks for all your help everyone.

Sony's site is a pretty impossible place to find anything.  lol.  I gave up looking, but that burner should be good.  What firmware version is on there now, and how old is it?

Try this link for Sony firmware updates.

http://codeguys.rpc1...w_overview.html

Once you find the model of your burner you usually have to follow another link which takes you to firmware versions for that burner.

I used Nero's Info Tool to check what version I had on my drive.

My version is UDS2 and I just bought the laptop a few weeks ago.  Thanks for the link bds.  It does show my model although I'm not exactly sure what it means.  It looks like UDS2 is the current version for the Dell OEM.  Then it's got beside it UYS2 and UYS3 beside the Dell version.  I'm guessing that UYS3 would be the latest version?

You're probably right to assume UYS3 is the latest version.
If I were you I would Google the topic of firmware updates in general to ensure you are confident enough to do it and follow the instructions to the letter.

Good luck.

After talking to Dell technical support, I've decided to not do the firmware thing since I can't be absolutely sure that it won't trash my drive.  At least I can burn DVDs, although I resent having to pay money to experiment with brands of disks to see if they work with my drive.  This is what people call a STANDARD?!?!?
