On a friend's computer, I downloaded, paid for, and installed the $14 decoder pack advertized to make the Windows media player play DVDs.  A DVD burner drive is installed in the computer.  I have tried everything I know to do, and the player still will not play DVD's.  It starts to play, shows a still picture, and freezes.  Help, anyone?

The computer is, by the way, adequate (3.1 gig Pentium IV processor and 256 meg RAM)

Right click on the desktop and select Properties and click on the Settings Tab. Change the screen resolution to 1024 x 768 and change the color settings to 16 Bit. Press Apply and then press Advanced. Click on the Monitor Tab and make sure the refresh rate is set to 75 Hertz. Now click on the Troubleshoot Tab and make sure Hardware Acceleration is set to Full. Click apply and then ok and try a DVD.

Go to your control Panel and open up the Cineplayer decoder options. Make sure that all the boxes are unchecked on the Video tab. Press apply then ok and play a DVD.

Update your video card drivers.

Update your version of DirectX.
