Hi,

To start, I'm a complete newbie & have grazed the current threads but haven't found appropriate help - apologies if I'm asking a stupid question!

I purchased an upgrade to Easy Media Creator 9, choosing the cheaper download option. Programme has worked relatively fine, and still does, but an annoying glitch has now occured. For some reason EMC has been prompted to install the 'Sonic Cineplayer Decoder Pack' but fails to successfully install since it cannot locate 'Roxio Easy Media Creator 9 Suite.msi'. If I attempt to cancel the installation it merely pops back up, again & again & again!

It appears that this is due to me not having the 'original' installation disks but just the downloaded 'RoxioEMCSuitev9[1].0_efisd_R03.exe' file. I don't seem to be able to get out of this loop.

I've tried using add/remove programmes to repair the installation but that results in the same message. Presumably this is likely to or already has happened on 'from download installations' but I can't find any solutions for the knowledgebase or Roxann.

Help!

If you open the exe files which you downloaded with winrar, you can extract them to folders 0- actually I'd recommend you burn the contents of the extracted folders to two CDs as backup

The .msi file you need is in the 'program' file - extracted you can get at it
If it ain't broke, fiddle with it until it breaks, then fiddle with it until you get it fixed

I'm glad someone asked about this, because I've been having precisely the same problem lately. Roxio 9 worked fine for the first several days after I downloaded it, so I don't know why this suddenly popped up.

But I'm not tech-savvy enough to understand your first response...
1. What is winrar? I've searched my entire c drive and found no winrar anywhere.
2. What is "folders 0"?
3. Would a re-download of V9 do the trick? If so, how can I do that without paying again?

Thank you.

I'm a terrible typist (and a great typoist) - that should just be 'folders'

You should be able to download more than once - use the same login and so on that you originally used

The .msi file is in the root of the archive - it's called
Roxio Easy Media Creator 9 Suite and it's properties (the grey text) should read Windows Installer Package
If it ain't broke, fiddle with it until it breaks, then fiddle with it until you get it fixed

Hi again - with a bit more research I think I've got to the bottom of this.

Having searched the forum with a bit more rigour I find plenty of other info on this problem (apologies - probably should have done that in the first place!).

'Unpacking' the downloaded EMC9 install file to 'disk 1' etc does get you access to the .msi file it initailly asked for but this doesn't get round the problem - it seems to just make up another .msi it's after.

Consensus seems to be that this arises from legacy Roxio stuff on your PC. On inspection I had loads, having updated from EMC7 to EMC8 and then EMC9. Only solution appears to be a 'clean install'. I followed the instructions below (copied from another forum post - to which I've added my own experience) and, so far, everything seems to be OK.

Here's what I did to eliminate the problem with the installer.

Uninstall EMC9 from ADD/REMOVE (Jenks - including Drag to Disc for good measure, make sure this is fully exited and not just 'hidden' before trying to unistall)
Reboot XP
Windows\Installer folder rename .MSI file that appears in " can't find" error message to something_msi.old (Jenks - I had a good check thru the installer folder and did the same thing to other Roxio & Sonic decoder pack files)
remove C:\Program Files ROXIO and Sonic
rename C:\Program Files\Common Files\ROXIO Shared to ROXIO_old and Sonic Shared to Sonic_old. Note: these maybe deleted after EMC9 is reinstalled
rename cmdvdpak.cpl and cmdvdpakENU.dll in Windows\System32 folder to cmdvdpak_cpl.old and cmdvdpakENU_cpl.old. Note: these maybe deleted after EMC9 is reinstalled (Jenks - I couldn't find these so assume they went in the unistall)
Edit Registry - caution please and registry backup advised (scarey stuff but I managed not to cock it up!!)
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\ROXIO and Sonic delete keys
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ROXIO and Sonic delete keys
Reboot XP
Start EMC9 Setup

Hope this helps - takes a while but hopefully will achieve a stable install with no random legacy stuff haunting you!!

Cheers

Jenks
