What the heck happened to Roxio's recorder support info? It's not needed for versions after 6.

Hi all. Ok, I've wasted several hours on this and am pi$$ed off to no end. I had to post this at some other forum:

<rant>
Look at this BS. http://www.winoncd.d...t/drv_user.html
"Note: Support for Easy CD Creator and DirectCD"

I FINALLY found that page, and that #$^@ link is bad!! It goes some OTHER page! Their search SUCKS. It keeps saying I'm searching for "POPCORN" when I search for 'recorder support'!!! That "RoxAnn" assistant of theirs is ON CRACK or brain dead!! They totally ABANDON anyone that is NOT using their @$%#$ latest version!!

Also, http://www.roxio.com/enu/support/service/c...er_support.html
Now do YOU see any link for recorder support????
"First, you can go to our recorder support page to find if you need an update."

You can't even d'load their freakin' updates without being subjected to logins. I am appalled that one must be subjected to so much BS just to download a $#@!% update!! This is INSANE. I cannot login using my OLD login info, NOR ANY NEW INFO!! I keep getting "REGISTRATION_GENERAL_ERROR" and the same exact thing happens when I try and get to the forums! So I can't even ask this at their forums! :)
</rant>

So POH-LEEZE, can someone tell me where is the freakin' link for recorder support? I have EMC8 and I need to know 1) how to download updates for it, and 2) if it will support a DQ60 (BenQ, DVD+/-R & RW, & DVD-RAM).
Thanks.
--------
The only thing that's changed since then, is I was able to get the update downloaded, and obviously was able to create a new user here. (I had to email the domain owner of Roxio.com to get them to do that). I still need to know what happened to all the recorder support links, or at least if that DVD-RW drive will work with EMC8.
Thanks,
-Clint

The first link you posted is for a very old product so anything there would not be applicable to V8. That product was sold when burners were still burning at 2 and 4 X but the faster ones were being developed. The second link you posted took me to a page where you could select updates to various software versions.

When you are saying recorder do you mean burner? Any updates for the burner would be called firmware and would be placed on the burner manufacturers site- in your case BenQ, Yes, if you are using that burner, you should be able to use DVD-RW blanks. I looked at the BenQ site and did not find any updated firmware for your burner.
What problems are you having other than not finding Roxio sites? If you are having trouble burning, perhaps you have bad blanks. Product quality varies with manufacturer. Verbatim, Fujifilm (made in Japan) and others are good but house brands and Memorex have been known to cause trouble. You can often get some bad discs in a cakebox when the rest are good. If you can't play a DVD-RW on the player attached to a TV then the problem is the player. Some won't play certain types of discs; especially home burned RW. RW discs of any kind are not intended for long term storage.

If you come back and post what your problem is, perhaps we can provide more directed help. I don't want to be mean but perhaps a course in computers and some time spent with the manual might be in order. Please don't flame me, I'm just being honest based on your post. I want us both to have a happy holiday season.

Thanks for the reply, but I don't understand the confusion. I stated clearly:

That's pretty straight to the point. I didn't say anything about "firmware". I said updates, software updates for EMC8; and will that DVD burner/recorder work with EMC8. Roxio themselves call it "recorder support", so I would gather one would know from that "burner", same thing.

I build computers for a living. I'm not going to put this DVD drive in a customers PC if it cannot work with EMC8.

So....again, where are the links Roxio used to have for "optical recording/burning devices" that will work with their products (EMC8), or if no one knows why they've hidden those pages and stopped giving the information; will that DQ60 work with EMC8?
Thanks.

No drive support updates are needed anymore. After version 5, the Roxio software relies on the firmware in the DVD/CD burner to recognize it. You need to have the latest updated firmware installed for the BenQ, and you should be fine.

BTW, that particular BenQ model was not their best effort. This is just one thread about the burner, but there are a multitude of them about the problems that model has had.

(Strange I was never notified of any updates to this thread). Thanks for the info. Why the hell would they remove those links? I don't understand how anyone is supposed to know if their drive will work with the product!

So I'm curious as to how you know it will work with EMC8?

Thanks for replying. Yeah I saw some of that info about the burner. They've released new firmware (4-2006), and software updates which should address any issues. Qscan, Qsuite, etc. http://www.benq.us/support/downloads/downl...ads&dtype=D

I don't know what you mean by post #5. I'm simply curious as to how you know that drive will work with EMC8. If it relies on firmware, then I still need to know how you know it will work. A drive's firmware doesn't have any info in it describing which 'ware it will support.
Thanks.

Roxio EMC 8 is designed to work with optical drives. The folks here own several different brands and that is not a problem!
Firmware is a instruction list for burning certain media, yours is below.

I was getting the notifications, they stopped.

I don't know what you mean by post #5. I'm simply curious as to how you know that drive will work with EMC8. If it relies on firmware, then I still need to know how you know it will work. A drive's firmware doesn't have any info in it describing which 'ware it will support.
Thanks.

Post #5 of this thread is where I told you that Roxio software drive support updates are no longer needed. Let me see if I can make this clearer. ALL CD and DVD drives, manufactured since 1997, will be recognized by the software, IF the firmware for said drives is up to date.

THERE IS NO NEED TO MAKE A LIST OF EVERY OPTICAL DRIVE MADE!

I got that, but what I'm not clear on.....is it now the sole responsibility of the optical burner manufacturers to make a drive work with, or not work with ECDC/EMC via firmware? If so, then that brings up the original question again; HOW do you know? How does one know "this latest firmware version for [whatever] will work with Roxio products". Define "latest" in this context. After a certain date? FW updates before (example) 2006 won't work with Roxio? What if I have a drive XYX model #123 and its "latest firmware" is "abc" and it's from (example) 12-20-2005? That's the latest, so will it work with Roxio?

How will I know this in the future for all other optical burners I get in that only come with Nero? Drives' firmware updates don't state something like "Added support for Roxio products", so you have no way of knowing, they only state media compatibility support changes and maybe speed changes. See what I'm saying/asking?

Roxio EMC 8 is designed to work with optical drives. The folks here own several different brands and that is not a problem!
Firmware is a instruction list for burning certain media, yours is below. [snipped]

Thanks for that list, that may come in handy.

Yes, I know exactly what firmware is. And as I've been unsuccessfully trying to point out, that list you posted doesn't say anything in it about "ROXIO", like I just said, only blank burning media and speeds. Therefore the reason I'm in the dark about "all latest firmware will work with Roxio".

All CD burning s/w now (and has for some time) used the drive's firmware to check the media and the old 'database' system was dropped.

With DVDs especially, there is a small 'info' track on each stating its burn speed and so on and the drive firmware reads this and passes the info along to the software.

The older system of having the software use a drive database fell into disuse, so now, as new media becomes available, fully updated firmware became more necessary to be able to check what the media was reporting

Thank you.

Looking over that list, I don't see any mention of Verbatim media. Does that mean it won't work? I've been using that in my Plex PX-721A (SATA). I think Verbatim may be one of those types that's actually made my Ritek, or Yuden, something like that.

I am surprised that a somebody who is in the business of building computers is asking basic questions like this, you should know all this stuff , especially about CD and DVD drives, manufactured since the late 90's, will be recognized by the software, if the firmware for the drives is up to date.

Here is some more info: http://www.digitalfa...ia/dvdmedia.htm

Yes, I'm fully aware of that. Like I said, I know what FW is.

I said I built computers. That's hardware, and Windows OS's. I didn't say I was a software vendor or blank media vendor!! It's the customers' option as to what software they want to install!

I've come across numerous optical burners that will NOT work Roxio. So don't tell me that ALL of them since the late 90's will work. Furthermore, I have NEVER USED EMC8, I've only used ECDC 6 and earlier, and personally, very rarely at that.

After all this and the mofo's firmware can't be updated! I run the FW updater and it says "The drive is not allowed to be updated." !!! Current FW is "GRDC". The drive has on it "DQ60", but from what I'm reading now, Teac makes it but I have no idea what Teac FW it would take...if any. Ho boy, this is going to take some research. :)

A quote from another forum:
However nobody at BenQ knew why the MREC flasher program always returned the "The drive is not allowed to be updated" message. WTF??

Looks like it may be a Teac DV-W516E, but that FW page says "Note that this program cannot be used for the DV-W516E with a firmware revision other than 1.05/1.07/1.0B/1.0C/1.0D/1.0E."
