"There is not enough space on this disc"?

that is the error i get when i try to burn a 650mb avi to DVD-Video. im sure it can be done. can someone help me out with this? thanks

Choose Save as Disc Image instead of clicking the burn button. When the file is done select it with the Image File setting in the Copy window. If it is too big for a single-layer DVD Toast will use its Fit-to-DVD feature to make it fit.

I'm presuming you placed the AVI in the Video window with DVD video selected as the format.
