EMC 9 causes Windows Media Center to Crash. After installing the program on my Windows Media Center PC it caused my Video Codecs to stop functioning. I went to the manufacturer and reinstalled the codecs but when I clicked on "LIVE TV" in media center the Roxio Activation screen came up. I repeated the install of the Codecs and it still did the same thing and after about 15 times of cancelling the EMC9 activation screen it shows up a Video Codec Error in WMC tv area... :)

This is a known issue with 9.0 (on DivX files)

So why didn't you just activate the MPEG codec? IF you want to use Videowave or MyDVD, it will need to be activated anyway.

* 1st Post! *

Hello everyone.

I have been watching various codec related posts with great interest for a while now and after a few teething problems I think that I have got EMC9 running OK now.

I have just formatted my HDD & clean reinstalled windows & I have a couple of questions.

Should I unstall EMC9 before I install any codecs or vice versa and what would anyone recommend as the best codec pack (if any) to install..ie Ace, K-light, etc?

Thanks!

Mark

Personally I like the KLite pack (well for a start it's free and never gave me any problems)

Installation - again, read this post before you start:

Cheers for that but that post doesn't really answer my 1st question. What I want to know is does it make any difference if I install EMC9 before a codec pack or not? I have been using Roxio (6, 8 and now 9) for a while now and one thing that I do notice is that its a bit fragile (for want of a better word!) in compatibility with other software, codecs etc.

Maybe someone could compile a list of stuff that isn't too happy with Roxio?...maybe someone already has!

Actually, I had an older version of KLite installed when I switched from EMC8 to EMC9. After I upgraded, I also installed the latest KLite and don't have any problem so as to which goes first - I have to admit I haven't a clue :)

Personally, I do NOT recommend any of those 'shareware' type package. First you don't know if they are virus/trojan/malware free. The codec may or may not work properly with all applications and usually cause more problems than they fix. (my personal experience anyway)

Shouldn't matter which order of installation. Codecs are assigned a 'merit' value when installed. Just because you installed these codec packs does not mean that they will EVER get used by the system or by any application. It all depends on the assigned merit value for system use. Most applications will ONLY use their own codecs regardless of what else you have installed.

So by installing these packs, you may affect which codec that Windows Media Player may use, but not Videowave or MyDVD.

Gary - I've been using KLite for a long time - there is NO malware in it (if there was, I wouldn't have recommended it)

I didn't say that it did and I still don't recommend shareware codec packs. Since users have no real control over what codecs applications will use, they serve no purpose. Perhaps if the OP is into using other shareware apps that allow you to choose a codec for rendering, but those codecs have no bearing on how MyDVD will render.

Considering what EMC9 provides out-of-the-box (+QuickTime it requires for some operations), I'd really wonder if I need any extra codecs packs.

Usually AC3filter and ffdshow suffice.
