Can you define 'shutdown'. Exactly what happens... and which applications have you tried to start when this happens?

I have had simlar problems. Every time I start my DVD creator my computer reboots. No blue screen, but black screen reboot. I have tried updating to direct x9 and updating my nvidia geforce driver without success. I have also tried uninstalling my virus software and my my firewall. This continues to happen. I have also tried to reinstall and uninstall the software. Seems like many people are having problems with the DVD software. I have 2.4gighz processor with 52 gigs of hard drive. 512 of RAM.

Wondering if your video card is made by ATI?
Thanks,

Do you have Windows Sp2 installed. i'm wondering if it has something to do with this. Try disabling it & see.
The other thing may be permissions. Are you signed on as a administrator. I know this was a big thing in earlier versions.

Some additional information, however. I have not used the Roxio DVD burning capability. Instead, I use Pinnacle Studio 10, and it causes the problem when I attempt to burn from there. Likewise, I get the problem when I try to view a DVD when using CyberLink Power DVD. It seems to be happening anytime I attempt to access a DVD with any program. It does not happen when I read a CD in the drive.
I use Windows XP Pro SP2 on a 3GHz Pentium with a Pioneer DVD-A08XL drive.

Have you checked your CPU and motherboard temperatures just after this happens, to see if you have a heat issue?

Not to mention your power supply. If you have added a lot of cards to your computer it may be marginally acceptable. If you did or not, may be starting to fail.
If you are comfortable with opening your computer case, you may want to blow it out with compressed dry air from Radio Shack or other supplier. It is amazing how much crud builds up on the internal fans. I'm sure that you know this but for others, make sure your computer is off and unplugged and if you plan on touching the inside of the case, make sure you are grounded.
If you don't mind, what is the new software?
