I know this can be done however I'm not sure the way I did it was the correct way. I connected the audio cables to the dvd player and cpu, then used the capture audio from sound card to record into roxio. I didnt change any default settings prior to transfer and the audio was captured. The problem was when I played the audio in sound editor it sounded horrible. there was a lot of "static like" sound over top of the voice. I figure if I played with the sound editor maybe I could get it out, but I just get very frustrated not knowing how to adjust all the settings. Maybe initially I could change a few defaults before transfering so the audio when I play back is the same as the dvd I recorded from?

You can use the Sound Editor or Music Disc Creator to import audio from non-commercial DVD.

Thanks for the reply. The DVD that I am copying from is a commercial DVD so I'm not sure but maybe thats the problem? I didnt try copying with sound editor or music disk creator either, so I'll give that a try also. Thanks

Even if its just the audio portion of the dvd? Like I said I was able to transfer the audio, and it just seems like theres a lot of static to it. Seems as if it could be cleaned up?

I'm not interested in the video portion of the DVD.

I'm not sure if this will work for you but if you were able to capture the music from a DVD, it may not be protected. Not all commercial discs are.

Go to Windows, Start>Run and type in dxdiag > then OK. Go to the sound tab and back down on the audio acceleration a couple of notches. Try listening again.

Sounds good! I'll let you know what happens. I do think the DVD is protected somewhat because I do see a disc icon that has a lock over top of it. I assume that means it's locked, but again I was able to bring over the audio.

That might be the reason that the sound is so poor.

If you have a DVD drive on the PC and your sound card has the option to record 'what you hear', you could play the DVD on the PC and use easy audio capture set to record what you hear. Make sure you have flat equalizer and no sound effects (e.g Creative EAX), to avoid distorting 'what you hear'. Also mute microphone, line in to avoid possible extraneous noise. Start recording a few seconds before starting the DVD. Then in sound editor you can cut out the first few seconds of silence.

I really appreciate all of your help everyone. I cant wait to see if the advice everyone's given works when I get home. There's a great version of a song that I want to put in a video of my little boys life from birth to now. No matter how hard I've looked I can only find the version of the song on the DVD. Hopefully I will eventually be able to contribute and help others with their problems in the future. Thanks again

Well I appreciated all the help you all left me. Unfortuanately I couldnt get the audio right using any of your advice. What I ended up doing was splicing together parts of the song recorded live at concert from a media sharing site to the portions of the same sog from the DVD that didnt sound too bad. I equalized the volume and seems to sound good. Whatever works right? Thanks again.
