dell demension 4600
pentium 4 2.4 GHz
4 gigs of ddr400
agp ati all in wonder based in the radeon 9600 chip
windows xp pro sp2
i install it and i dont get a single error message or anything of that sort but when i do try to do pretty much anything it ends up hanging and wont let me do anything on me computer i go into task manager and it will switch between responding and not responding and the only way i can gain use of my computer is by ending the task. it'll hang and not let me do anything i thought maybe its just a real resource hog (which it is), so i let it hang for over an hour and nothing ...in my opinion this software sucks badly and unless it starts working then i would say that roxio really needs to get it together with there $100 crapware...should have been free if you ask me cause the only thing that i found it did right was take up a gig of space on my computer...any suggestions would be great...i also uninstalled it then installed it on a similar computer only difference is that it has a 2.66GHz pentium 4 and a lower video card and it does the same thing, just hangs and does nothing...no error dialogs, no restarts absolutly no nothing...any idead are most appreciated

We have seen A LOT of problems here which seem to be DELL related. Specific fixes have not been identified. Could be how Dell sets up the systems.
There is one new feature that takes up a lot of resources on the FIRST boot - watched folders. It should show it the system tray. Right click on it and turn it off. This is a new feature in Media Manager that indexes ALL of your media files (video and audio). Once this has finished, it shouldn't take many resources. I don't use any of the Media Manager features and uninstalled it.

thanks for the info, do you happen to know if roxio has or will have an update or fix for their software, or do you have any other ideas on what the problem would be. kind of hard to understand how a $90 software is able to sell and have nothing work. never encountered that before...all suggestions welcome. thanks

For some reason (which we haven't worked out yet) Dell machines are having a LOT of trouble with the s/w as opposed to other 'brands' or even custom built ones.

So... New owners of the software turn to the forums for help and what do they get...
One response saying that our tax money is certainly not going to education.
Another asking if a shift key is broken.
Another criticizing punctuation.
Now we are blaming Dell machines even though you can get the software pre-installed if you choose to customize your system during purchase.
And another stating that they are having the same problem(s) as the original poster.

This is NOT a wild guess that Dells are having more problems - it's a simple statement of fact
I don't know about a 'limit' on installation - I haven't come across one (but I only installed once with no problem) but I also haven't herard of anyone reaching a limit/ The only similar problem was someone trying an EMC8 patch and turned his program into a time-expired trial.
What is critical on EMC9 is the video drivers - if they aren't up to the mark, then the video section of the program will fail - they NEED a reasonable video sub-system and on-board graphics in most cases just can't deliver
WMP 11 and IE7 are also known to cause problems - this is down to MS making fundamental changes to the OS that has had a knock-on effect

Do a search on any other problem (lockup, audio out of sync, etc. )with the software and see how many hits you get.
Your last post was a bit more like I am sure frustrated, angry users would expect.
Now if we could only find solutions.
I bought EMC 9 in an effort to get around problems I was/am having with EMC 8. Roxio should have spent some time/money debugging EMC 8 instead of prematurely releasing EMC 9.
Can you tell that I am one of the frustrated, angry users?

First - just WHAT is the specific problem and in what part of the 30 or so apps in the suite?
Second - what are your system specs (graphics card mainly)?
Third - did you update the video drivers from the CARD maker - not from Dell?
Fourth - did you install DirectX 9,0c (Dec 2006 release)?
Fifth - have you added any other software such as IE7 and WMP11?
Sixth - did you follow normal procedure and install with anti-virus off?
All those points are covered in the board
Also - bear one thing in mind - we are neither employed nor paid by Roxio/Sonic in any way - we're simply users. Your 'comment' on what was said about a barely legible post may be valid in your eyes - obviously you have never spent any length of time trying to help people and when you get a post that takes a long time to decipher, anyone would get a bit frustrated.

Well Barry, if you can do a better job than the folks here who have helped thousands of people, then do it! Easy for you to criticize, in your frustration, but if you read as many posts as we do, then run across a runon post that is tough to read and understand, then you basically ignore it.

Ashamed of what?
I have been all over this board asking for help. Yes... There are quite a few of useful "How To's" and I have read a bunch of "thank you, it worked" posts.
I am a major contributor on quite a few other forums. However in those forums I can give useful information because there are certain areas of the universe where I know what I am talking about. I haven't given any advise on this forum except I told a guy how to configure his computer so it would not re-boot endlessly. That is why I am here, asking for help. I'm not giving advise and not indicating or suggesting that some poor user is uneducated because he doesn't use capitals at the beginning of a sentence. I have agreed with a few rants though.
Ashamed of what?? Basically some of you pretty much called the guy an idiot for not using capitals at the beginning of sentence's instead of giving him any useful suggestions / advice. I understand what he was saying. Could have used a little more detail but I got the drift.
gi7omi... I have a few posts on the board(s) explaining specifically what my problem(s) are and my system config. Once we got past the whole video driver and direct x thing, my answers to questions have been ignored. Thats OK. We (I) are (am) probably at a support level best left to the engineers at Roxio. Now if I would only hear from them.
Believe me... I have much better things to do with what little spare time I have than to hawk these boards and pick fights with you guys. I am just here often hoping for a patch / update / suggestion / or anything else that will help get the software running as I would expect.
To infer that some guy is not educated because he didn't capatalize in his quest for a bit of help is wrong and rude. I guess that's what got me going.
I want the software to work.. I haven't given up. You have not seen me write a post bashing the software or even Roxio. But the fact that Roxio has not responded to support tickets and left the user hanging is not the best situation and every time a post of that nature is brought up, some of you take it personally.
Talk to you guys soon. Have a good evening.

I never saw your other posts so I don't know the problem - however if you post it here I will see it.
In the meantime - try the suggestions I made in a previous post and then let us know the result or lack thereof

well anyone who stood in my defence; thank you. as for the capital letters and run on paragraphs; it is due to constantly being on other forums with computers and hardware. you see, for all those who may have thought i am an uneduacated person, are wrong. i simply dont take the time to be acurate when it comes to posting is because i dont enjoy spending any extra time with typing perfect for those who cannot get the jist of what im saying due to THEIR lack of logic. i build computers for a livin, and use this computer as a tester and a machine for me to learn software and registry listings. i have a bachelors degree in computer science, and am currently starting my own computer shop in the next few months. so for those who want to know if i know what a shift key is ...yes i do..i just dont use them.
as for the software, i really think a big problem is that the programs requirments are really under rated. i think maybe, in my case and maybe others, is that i dont have enough cpu power but maybe its my card (i have it listed in the very beginning of this thresd). i got all the audio features working, the image saving and burning is working, as well as most of the video section. the only thing i really cant do is convert, or compile my files. basicaly any thing that requires me to pull video data from my drive prooves pointless, but i am confident that i will work through these issues and get this software to run the way it ought to.
as far as my drivers go i have a hard time with the card i have. it and all the other oarts arnt really from dell. only the motherboard which has the bios by dell, but even the software and all hardware are not the ones that came with the machine. it is basicaly a custom except for the mainboard.
i know that the people here are not from roxio, i was simply critisizing the knucklehead that did the same. i didnt know that some people have a hard time to read when not written proper, i guess i just learned to work around that as well as many other things. i didnt see the point in commenting on something completly off topic and even more not even respond to anything in my thread. why even bother ya know...sorry YOU know?
anyways thanks for the help and sorry for the problems. when i figure more of this program out ill be sure to report it here, until then all suggestions and comments welcomed

Breaking it up into sentence/paragraph helps clarify what you're saying (as for lower case, hey I gave up on e.e.cummings after 5 pages)
Opening a shop - a word of advice. Work from home until you build up a client base (otherwise you're out of pocket on rent, etc). I get by reasonably well on 'word of mouth' advertising and a few contacts I made in a prior job before I retired. Once you get that base and enough satisfied people then consider a 'proper' shop

I was a service dept manager for a TV rental firm here and saw the writing on the wall years ago (that TV servicing was on the way out as it was cheaper to buy a new TV or VCR than it was to get one repaired properly so (luckily enough I'd done a course on microprocessors and microcomputers way back when VCRs started to use digital control) I switched to computer servicing (they're easier to lift and you don't get the same arguments about the cost of repair)
