Toast Titanium 6.1.1 does not now recognize my burner, even though it had in the past.  I have a LaCie DVD-R/RW+CD.  Toast says that I have a Pioneer model.  I, of course, cannot record anything.  Is there a way of manually telling Toast the name of my actually burner?

LaCie makes the drive enclosure, not the drive itself. So Toast will report the brand of drive that's in the case. How is your drive connected? What happens when you click on the drive's name at the bottom of the Toast window? Does Apple System Profiler describe the drive as capable of burning discs? Sometimes the OS has Firewire or USB problems that prevent the OS from knowing that a drive can burn discs. One thing that might fix this is to download and apply Apple's Combined System Update. For example use the 10.3.9 combined updater on your existing 10.3.9 install or 10.4.8 updater or 10.2.8 updater -- you didn't mention which OS you are running.

Here is what my iMac G5's About this Mac says about its firewire connections:

FireWire Bus:

Maximum Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec

> LaCie 1394 DVD-R/RW+CD drive LUN 0:

  Manufacturer: LaCie Group SA
  Model: 0x0
  GUID: 0xD04B490D08862A
Maximum Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec
Connection Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec
  Sub-units:
> LaCie 1394 DVD-R/RW+CD drive LUN 0 Unit:
  Unit Software Version: 0x10483
  Unit Spec ID: 0x609E
  Firmware Revision: 0x7738
  Sub-units:
> LaCie 1394 DVD-R/RW+CD drive LUN 0 SBP-LUN:

Toast says my drive is Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-K04F.  The only other choice on the pull down menu is "Other shared recorder..."

I am running 10.4.8.  I hope this is of help in identifying the drive.

Yes, that's helpful and similar to how my LaCie d2 Firewire drive is described.  What does System Profiler say about the drive under the Disc Burning heading.

My LaCie drive gets reported as a NEC drive. There are CD-Write and DVD-Write descriptions as well.

The reason I'm asking about system profiler is that Toast typically sees any drive that the OS recognizes.

Disc burning:

PIONEER DVD-RW  DVR-K04F:

  Firmware Revision: I437
  Interconnect: ATAPI
  Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)
  Cache: 2000 KB
  Reads DVD: Yes
  CD-Write: -R, -RW
  DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW
  Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
  Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
  Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
  Media: No

It looks like you were right.  Or, is this referring to the iMac's built in burner?

What I get is an error message asking me to put in disc.  Also indicated is "Tray is Open", when tray is closed.

That's referring to the internal drive because it says the Interconnect is ATAPI. My profiler lists two different drives, so your LaCie drive isn't appearing.

This can be a Firewire issue. Try a different Firewire port, if possible. Change the order of any Firewire devices you have connected in series. Try a different Firewire cable. And install the 10.4.8 combined system update.

I tried two different firewire connectors and a second firewire port.  No change.

At this point it should be noted that I have two firewire devices.  Only my LaCie burner is identified on the System Profile Firewire list.  My LaCie external backup is listed only as "Unknown Device".  My backup works fine.

Regarding the 10.4.8 Combo Update, I already am running 10.4.8, so I am unsure as to what to do.

I very much appreciate your help.

I know you are already running 10.4.8. But the incremental updates often cause strange glitches in the USB and Firwire links. The fix is to apply the combined system updater on top of the existing 10.4.8 install. It can't do any harm. Go to macfixit.com and you'll see this is a common troubleshooting step.

This is a tough problem to diagnose. The OS isn't recognizing the drive. You've tried different ports and cables so that indicates the problem is either the OS or the drive. If you have another computer available you can connect the drive to the other computer to see if it gets recognized. You don't need Toast on the other computer and it doesn't even need to be a Mac. If the drive isn't recognized on other computers then you need to contact LaCie about your failed drive.

If it is recognized on other computers then the problem is with the OS. What I've done is install OS X on an external Firewire hard drive so I can boot my Mac from an alternative System folder. It makes it easy for me to compare whether the problem exists only on the built-in drive's System. I also can run Disk Warrior and Disk First Aid when booted from the external drive.

Ultimately it may mean you need to do a reinstall of the OS. But I don't know for sure that this is where the problem lies. I once had a Mac running os !0.3.x that wouldn't recognize either the external nor internal drive as a burner. Reinstalling the OS fixed the issue. But yours does recognize the internal drive so this is a different situation.

I do know that once you get System Profiler to list the drive in the Disc Burning list that Toast also will recognize the drive.

A likely solution just dawned on me. Shut down your Mac (not a restart) and wait about 10 minutes before starting it up again. You can try that with the drive connected or without the drive connected at the time of startup.

Thanks for the suggestion.  But before I saw it and out of frustration, I put the Disc Burning profile up on my screen and began fideling the wires.  Nothing happened with moving the firewire around.  So, I (similar to what you suggested) unplugged the LaCie power cord for a few minutes and replugged it.  It worked.  My Lacie burner driver is now recognized by my computer and by Toast.  I successfuly burned my DVD.  And, all is well.

Thank you so much for much for your guidance and patience and for caring in the first place.  I also contacted Roxio, LaCie and Apple and received near nothing.  LaCie never responded at all.
