When I burn a CD its done within minutes, but burning a DVD takes forever. An average length movie takes aprox 3 hours to burn. Is that correct, or is it something I am doing?

TIA

You don't list your computer info but I'll assume you have a relatively good system that exceeds the requirements.
Alot depends on the file your using and whether it's dvd compliant or not. If you use a compressed file like divx, it will have to be converted to a dvd compliant file first and that takes time.  Use an mpeg and you'll likely cut your time depending on it's quality.
Smaller things are to keep your hard drive defragged and all background programs shut down while encoding.
