Hello,

I would appreciate any help anyone can give in this matter !!

I have just purchased a new external USB2 Sony DVD DW-D56A drive and I can read CD's and DVD's fine, I can also burn CD's perfectly but I can not burn DVD's at all.  It gets to 1% before bombing out with an Illegal Request "Write Error" error message.

Like I said, any help would be very much appreciated !

Thanks,

David

Usual culprits are:

If you 'updated' to Internet Explorer 7 and/or Media Player 11, you will have to remove those

Also - update the video drivers from the graphics maker's website (the ones on your machine could be out of date) and also download and install DirectX 9.0c (December release)

A check on the drive firmware wouldn't be a bad idea either
If it ain't broke, fiddle with it until it breaks, then fiddle with it until you get it fixed

In addition....

Are you using Easy Media Creator 7 to burn those CD/DVDs?

Sometimes with External burners, you need to restart the computer before you burn a DVD.

What type of DVDs are you trying to burn?   If you're burning from DVD Builder, frequently burning to an 'image file' instead of the DVD burner, then using Disk Copier to actually burn the DVDs works better.

If you're trying to copy copy protected DVDs, these programs will not copy them.

I am only trying to put standard office data on the disc, not trying to copy anything but it just fails straight away. . .   still working through some of your tips as I had both IE7 and MP11 installed.

I'll update when I've tested.

Thanks for your help so far !

Exactly how are you doing the burn? What EMC 7/7.5 program component are you using? All you have told us is that you are trying to burn a data DVD.
