I am new to EMC 8 but I used DirectCD for some time as a form of backup.
Reading the forum it appears that it is bad idea to do that. So what is wrong with 'package writing'?
And more importantly, I use FileSync to synchronise my data files from the Hard Disk to either CD or DVD media. That does not work with CDs or DVDs written without formatting first. What is the solution?

Packet writing just isn't as reliable and the created disc may not be readable by other computers. As back up, that last one may not be an issue. A disc formatted by packet writing can only be read by a computer that has packet reader on it. For instance if you had to drop to DOS, none of those disc would be readable. In otherwords, there must be some sort of software installed to read the disc.
I'm not familiar with FileSync, but if it works for you with Drag to Disc formatted discs, I see no reason to stop using it.

I experimented with their FolderSync program a few years ago on our network. Good program but we hit a bug that they wouldn't fix…
Like Gary said, if FileSync is working for you with D2D, go for it! I would recommend a set of discs to use with it, so that you are not using the same disc every time you write. For example, if you backup up daily use 10 discs: Week 1, Monday through Friday. Followed by Week 2, Monday through Friday.
If any disc shows any sign of trouble, longer than normal writes, long eject times, etc. replace it immediately.
