There was a problem writing to the disk. You can try again by clicking the Retry button. You will need another blank disk ready.

I am a past owner of Creator 5 with this computer, and suspect that my Creator 5 experiences may be relevant to this problem:
Generally, Creator 5 worked fine until a Windows patch introduced a compatibility problem -- at which point I had to download the latest update from Roxio to get CDs burned again. This has happened several times in the three plus years that I've owned this computer. The hardware has never been at fault. A Roxio update always fixed the problem.
Two weeks ago -- with Creator 5 -- I again encountered problems. Some CDs would burn, but the computer started spitting out many with error messages. I tried to update Creator 5, and discovered that Roxio has stopped supporting it.
So, I bought Creator 9 ... and encountered the error message at the top of this message:
Computer: Dell Precision Workstation 240, Win XP Pro with service pack 2 and all patches, Yamaha FIZEN CD-RW, HP 52x discs, which always have worked well in the past.
Disabling Norton anti-virus got some CDs to burn, but I'm not confident that this will fix the problem. My past experiences with Roxio software have been, consistently: if I've got the correct Creator update, I shouldn't have to disable Norton or X out anything is msconfig.

I've got IE7, and yep, the problems with Easy Creator 5 -- problems now continuing with Creator 9 -- started to appear at just about the time that I installed the IE 7 upgrade. So that's a likely candidate for 'source of the problem,' although I gotta admit, it seems strange that a browser upgrade would affect CD burning.
Will the update next month be a Creator 9 patch, or an IE 7 patch? I think you meant Creator 9 patch, but thought I should check.
I might wait for the patch, but also might check for other user experiences in other online forums and ask for a refund within the 35 day period indicated on the Roxio web site. If experiences with Nero are as bad as this, then I'm stuck, but -- well, it certainly doesn't seem reasonable to me that a user should periodically have one piece of software bomb out because of Windows updates. I don't have this problem with other programs.

The patch that should come out is for V9 and is mostly for making it Vista compatible.Since WMP11 and IE7 are both components of Vista I would believe that it will fix these problems.
Of the 2,IE7 is the more likely culprit. It has caused problems with all versions of Roxio.Try getting rid of it first. If that works then leave it off until a patch hopefully comes out soon.
I am not a Roxio employee and the patch I'm referring to has been talked about in other places on this forum. How long it will take before it comes out I can't say for sure.Hopefully it will be sooner than later.

- uninstalled Roxio, used System Restore to roll back to a pre-Roxio configuration, and installed a nifty little freeware program called CDBurnerXP. Installed quickly, looks great on screen -- and doesn't work. Essentially the same problem, with a software-specific error message.
- uninstalled CDBurnerXP, and installed Nero 7. More of a power user program than Roxio, it seems ...
... and, Nero 7 doesn't work either. Essentially the same problem, with a software-specific error message.
I may uninstall IE7, as you suggest, but want to think about it awhile before doing so.
I don't believe that anything is wrong with the burner or the disks. A, the disks always have worked well in this drive. B, all previous problems have been software related.

As said - remove IE7 and WMP11 (don't think about it - try it) You can always put them back if you really want clamped down DRM and a browser that is causing problems all over the place.
However - just because your drives haven't given trouble in the past, does NOT mean they can be overlooked. Failure to write is very often down to a drive. It's like saying you can't have a puncture in the car tyre because it was fine when you left the house.
But - the main thing is to do as suggested - remove IE7 and/or WMP11, try then and see if the problem clears

I use this computer for work. I open the hood these days only when forced to do so. I don't have the time to do an OS re-install if I foul things up by pulling IE7.
Right now everything is functional except the CD burner. I'm not going to pull IE7 until I do research that convinces me that the other patches won't be affected.

The thing is that IE is integrated into the OS. I'd uninstall it and then try to use System Restore to restore the computer to a point prior to installing IE7 if simply uninstalling IE7 doesn't resolve the issue.

I bought another burner, installed it and ran four burns with Nero 7 and IE 7 still installed. They came off without a hitch. Bottom line: either the last burner was going south, or I fixed the problem by introducing hardware that didn't suffer compatibility problems.
However, users here are not alone in their low estimation of IE7. I've seen similar comments elsewhere.

IE7 is really causing loads of problems - for a start it can't even work with some websites. Now a browser that needs code specially written, the least said the better.
