I am having difficulty when using EMC 8 to capture vhs tapes to my HDD.  I just changed computers (was using a SONY VAIO) and now have an HP Media center computer.  The video transfers fine but the sound is garbled.  I haven't seen that before and wonder if the is a way to configure the capture (bit rate, etc.)

Thanks

Try backing down on your audio acceleration by going to Windows>Start>Run> type in dxdiag>OK> go to the Sound tab and move the slider to the left a couple of notches.  That should help.  If you every have problems with another audio program, move the slide back a notch or two.  I don't think you'll need to though.
Regardless of what I say about computer maintenance, there is no need to defrag a solid state hard drive.

Steve, it was set one notch down and the sound test seemed to work -- I brought it down another noth but the speech still isn't smooth.  I appreciate your suggestion and welcome any other thoughts you may have.

When in doubt, move it a whole bunch of notches (or all the way) to see if there is a difference.  You can then play with moving it back up.

Steve, at no acce;erationm there was no audio -- one notch up the garble exactly the same.  But if I play the tape through the computer it comes through very clear (from the same source).  It is very confusing and there aren't many adjustments I can make in EMC8.

Check for new drivers for the soundcard - although the machine is Sony, it could have a sound chipset from another maker (Realtek AC3 is very common, as is nVidia and Creative). You should be able to find the sound system in Control Panel

Once you know that, go to the maker's website and look for drivers for your particular sound card. They may also have a sound utility program for it as well

Steve, I have an HP (I replaced the Vail which ran perfectly)  I tried to do a capture even though the sound was bad and I got an error

OPERATION "BUILD" ON CAPTURE MANAGER FAILED
fAILED TO BUILD CAPTURE GRAPH'

do you think it could be a software issue  -- i have no hardware conflicts and I know the sound card is working ok

Steve,  I removed my EMC8 completely and then re-installed the software and no improvement.  I tried changing the audio capture settings (stereo, monaural, joint, dual) changed the sample rate (48, 44.1, 32 KHz) and the Bit rate ( 192, 224, 256, 320, 384) but there was no change.

steve, I think I found the problem and work around.  There was a conflict between EMC8 and the MyDVD that came with the PC.  By removing EMC8, the MY DvD worked fine.  I took a chance and loaded Videowave 7 in and that worked fine with no conflict.  I inquired of Roxio to see if perhaps EMC9 would work OK or shoule I just upgrade the myDvD7 to My DVD 9.

Thanks for all of your help.  I hope this is useful to others who may be purchasing media center PC's

MyDVD9 is actually part of EMC9 so you could go that route and replace both

That's a good thought.  Is the DVD9 separate of is it installed integrated to EMC9.  The reason I ask is if the EMC 9 creates a conflict the way EMC8 did, I would then resort to the DVD 9 only.  One of the features that I don't want to give is the Brightness, Contrast and Saturation adjustment capability in the EMC suite.

Also, do you know if EMC 9 performs well under the new VISTA platform.?

Thanks for all of your inputs.  They have been very helpful.

Integrated - yes and no. It can't be installed seperately but does run on its own

EMC9 under Vista - too soon to tell really. There seems to be a bug on install in that it tries to install DLA (which isn't supposed to happen)

I just realized that EMC8 has MyDVD8 installed and perhaps that's the conflict with MyDVD7 which was installed on the computer.  If that's the case I could uninstal the ver7 and perhaps EMC8 will work.  Not sure how I would reinstall it if My DVD in EMC8 wont work but it's worth a shot and I could always restore the computer to the prior date which I assume wuill show DVD7 in place again.

Normally V7 and V8 work well together but some people have reported that installing v8 over V7 has caused a conflict.

Best bet is to uninstall both.  Install V8  (do you have the suite or the deluxe suite) and then after checking if is working correctly install V7 (if you want to).  Do not install two copies of Drag to Disc.  That would cause a conflict.

Try that first before doing a clean install.  Detail on how to do this is in the Tips and tricks section of V9.

Just to close this out -- I un-installed all sonic and Roxio programs and then re-installed EMC8 deluxe and it still would not work.  Based on that I ordered MyDVD 9.0 Premier and it works great and also gives me the editing capabilities including contrast and saturation which serves me well so I am a happy camper.  Perhaps EMC9 would have worked but I took the safe road.

Thanks again for all of your assistance.
