I had to change out my Dell DVR because it was crap and I went with the Sony like people suggested in this group and everything has worked fine. My new drive is 18x and in the Roxio software burn setup it has only an option of up to 16X. Is there a way to get 18X so I can burn faster?

You have to use media that is 18X rated & the Sony must recognize as such before you will see that speed.

To add to what Gary said, the way that CD/DVD software works nowadays is that it uses the drive firmware to check what the rated speed is on the media. There is a very small info track on each blank DVD with its info and the drive reads that.
Unlike CDs, DVDs will ONLY burn at their rated speed or lower - you can't get an 8x disc to burn at a speed over 8x - you can burn at a lower speed, but never at a higher one
