I feel excited to report a solution to a problem that has been bothering me off and on since last October.
Recently I reported not being able to burn a DVD containing ASF files. I got the 80040270 error.

I found that by going to tools/options and then choosing "software rendering" instead of "hardware rendering", my project burned successfully, and I could see the preview just fine. I don't know why I came upon this and tried it. But I'm happy to wrap up my project and to share this discovery.

Maybe this will help someone else who seems to be hitting the wall on burning dvd's.

That problem is usually caused by either out of date drivers for the graphics card or a graphics card that just can't handle the latest DirectX. I know I can't use hardware rendering on my laptop (with the S3 chipset and shared memory) but it works fine on the main box (better graphics system)

However, if you had done the diagnostic test in the program, it should have defaulted to software rendering automatically
If it ain't broke, fiddle with it until it breaks, then fiddle with it until you get it fixed

This is the first mention I have heard of a "diagnostic test". Where is this found? How would the average new user discover it? I've read quite a few posts on this 80040207 error, and you are the first to mention diagnostics. Thank you. If this is common knowledge, I wish I had heard of it two days ago when I posted on this error code. It didn't draw enough interest for a single reply... even from Roxio support.

Forgive me for being thick. It must be the cold, but I don't see anything in this screen about a "diagnostic test". Is the "graphics test" on this screen the "diagnostic" you mention? When I click on this, it does nothing to diagnose my problem or change the mode to software rendering. If anything, it's the other way around. When I'm in software rendering mode, the graphics test does its thing and moves me to hardware rendering mode - the very mode in which my project will not burn.

My whole point in starting this thread was to encourgage those who experience the 80040207 balk-at-burning problem to go to this "application setting" screen and manually choose "softwear rendering."

Thanks for including the screen print for others to view.

Thje graphics is diagnostic

It's strange tho that it is pushing you to hardware render - but stick with software if that works.

The only drawback will be you won't get the 3d transitions or some other transitions
If it ain't broke, fiddle with it until it breaks, then fiddle with it until you get it fixed

I too am getting 80040207. My graphics card should be plenty beefy. It has the latest drivers I have the latest Directx, I have defragged, cleaned my registry. Everytime I do the graphics test I default to hardware. I rendered one with software a week ago but I don't remember the results because I was working on trying to see the preview in MyDVD at the time. I have tried so many times I am confused. I do remember that it took about 2 1/2 hours to render s/w and about 1 hour doing the same 1/2 hour slideshow. I always burn an iso file before trying the DVD.

Check for background apps - we have had reports of something else causing this (in one case an 'mp3 rocket' being copnnected did it)

Search for 80040207 and see what else has been tried and what worked
If it ain't broke, fiddle with it until it breaks, then fiddle with it until you get it fixed

Having done everything else that is required:

1. Graphics card capable of task
2. Upgrade drivers for same
3. Defrag h/d
4. IE7 not installed
5. Directx9c
6. Registry cleaned

I did this.

After compiling my production in MyDVD by building the menus, adding the movies and saving to the spot of my choice on the hard drive I shut down all programs and restarted my computer.

After restart I went to Windows Explorer and found the file I saved and double clicked on it. It will open in MyDVD, bypassing having to open it through Roxio. At that point I burnt my production to an iso file. This rendered OK without a 80040207 error.

From there I went to Disc Copier and was able to burn a good disc.

Maybe it was just a coincidence but what the hell..........it worked this one time anyway.

Let me know of any success.

There seems to be a lot of problems using the 'Home' icon on the desktop and they're cured by ignoring it and running the app directly from the start menu - that's probably what happened in this case
