Did you update the card drivers from the maker's website? 'New' video cards can have the driver disc way out of date by the time you buy them). Also, check you installed the latest version of DirectX 9.0c from Microsoft.
A thing to try (which is how I do my video work) is not to do the render and the write in one operation but to render and save to the hard drive as a .iso file - then open that with Disc Copy
Also make sure you have no running apps during render - that takes the full capability of the CPU to do its job
