I have a MacBook 1.83 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, and have just purchased a LaCie d2 DVD RW 16x, which came bundled with Toast 7 Titanium. After installing the software, the first disc I tried to burn resulted in a buffer underrun error. I was trying to create a DVD from a VIDEO_TS file, and it was using the 'best' burn speed selected by Toast which was 16x. The error message was:
The drive reported an error
Sense Key ILLEGAL REQUEST
Sense Code 0x21, 0x02
I slowed the speed to 8x and received this error message:
Buffer Underrun Error
Writing was halted because data could not be sent to the recorder fast enough to maintain current write speed.
Please try again with a slower write speed.
I did and receiced these error messages:
The drive reported an error
Sense Key MEDIUM ERROR
Sense code 0x73, 0x04
Also:
Sense Key ABORTED COMMAND
Sense Code 0x04
LOGICAL UNIT NOT READY, CAUSE NOT REPORTABLE
I have been to the LaCie site and installed all of the updates that were mentioned mentioned for my burner, but ths did not help. I was using TDK DVD-R 1-16x discs, but I also tried the Verbatim DVD+R 16x that came with the burner and made another coaster. I also tried copying a mounted disc image of the VIDEO_TS file but this method also resulted in a buffer underrun error.
I'm out of ideas and at my wits end, can anybody please help? Thanks.

Did you install the Toast 7.1.2 update?

Since this is an external drive I suggest downloading and applying the 10.4.8 combined system update on top of your existing 10.4.8 installation. There sometimes are odd USB and Firewire issues that are fixed by applying the combined updater. There is no obvious reason for the buffer underrun error. In fact, it shouldn't happen at all. I believe the problem is something else that only surfaces as a buffer underrun. What's most likely is a Firewire or USB communication problem.

I downloaded the combo 10.4.8 intel update, but it wont allow me to install it onto the hard drive stating that the volume doesn't meet the requirements for this installation Is this because I already have 10.4.8 on there? Should I try the 'non-combo' 10.4.8 download instead?

No, don't use the incremental 10.4.8 updater. Apparently you already used the combo updater for your existing system update or your Mac came with 10.4.8 preinstalled. Does LaCie have any advice about your problem burning the discs? Maybe the drive is defective. I'm just guessing, so don't tell them someone at the Roxio forums told you the drive is defective. They will replace it, though, if you can't get it to burn discs.
If you have a Firewire hard drive you could install the OS on it and boot from the external drive. This is a way I use to test if a problem I'm having is with the OS (and makes it easy to run Disc Warrior). You also could try the LaCie drive connected to a different computer.

I am also having this problem. Mac G4 with OS 10.3.9, updated to Toast 7.1.2. Thought updating to full version of Toast would fix problem, it did not. I mostly burn data files. After 5 minutes, the burner has an error:
Sense Key=medium error
0x30, 0x05
Sense Code0x73, 0x03
Cannot write medium-incompatible format.
This is a Sony Dual RW drive-trying to burn on SonyDVD+R
None of the info on Roxio is fixing this.

Hallo
As I had this problem too burning video dvd. I then updated to Toast 8 and since to 8.0.1, OS 10.4.9. Just to tell you that I still get the same error, so it doesn't help to use money and buy a new version. Somebody must know what does this error mean??? I have tried another burner another cable another dvd. It is so frustrating!
Hope to get some help.

Please provide more of the details. What were the Toast settings? What was the source video? What type and brand of media? What Mac? You mention trying two burners and cables - what are they and is it USB or Firewrie? Have you tried Save as Disc Image and then burned the resulting file to DVD using the Image File setting in the Copy window? Have you tried burning at a slower speed setting than Best (such as 4x)? Have you tried burning a data DVD and does it also get you this error?
