None of the EMC9 functions which add movies will bring in a VOB file created by my Sony 810 DVD R/W unit. It attempts to create the title box, but does not add a thumbnail after that, so I can't play/review it.
Also, one of the functions hangs and has to be shut down with Task Manager.
VOB's from purchased DVD's as well as MOV files seem to add okay and I can play/review them.
I CAN get the failed VOB in using Capture & specifying the DVD F drive, but to work with it, I have to render it as a MPG or WMV first.
Anyone with a similar problem?
Regards, Ron

VOB 'is' an MPEG. IF you can capture it from the DVD to MPG file, you won't be losing any quality at that point.

Did you finalize the disc in your Sony recorder?

Yes, thanks. I have Sony DVD R/W+ so it finalizes it upon ejection. To double check, I finalized it also from the menu, but get the same failure.
I checked a couple of other movie non-protected DVDs with VOB files and was able to add movies for those, so there's something peculiar about my sony DVD R/W+ and the way it writes VOB files.
The strange thing is with Edit Video or Capture the VOB is recognized and I can trim and save it.
But not with Add Movies within Compile Videos or Disc Copier.
The reason I would like to work with Compile Video is it has a nice Preview/Trim window and I don't have to render the whole movie first as I do with Capture. Edit video, however, does let me trim w/o first rendering but it's Preview/Trim isn't as nice as the one in Compile Videos.
I'll talk to Sony and check around some more, but I'm sure I'll have to go with the workaround of Capture or Edit Video, as these problems always seem to wind up in a black hole.

I'm rather confused. You never mentioned that you were using Disc Copier before. I assumed you were using Videowave or MyDVD.
When you use Disc Copier's 'video compilation' mode, you won't 'see' the VOB files, but rather you should 'see' the entire movie as a whole. When you copied the DVD files, you should have copied ALL files including the IFO and BUPs. When you select the video_ts folder (I use the folders mode), the individual movies will show in the right pane. You can select the entire movie or one or more 'chapters'.

Yes, when I use either Compile Movies or Capture Video rather than Edit Video (Video Wave), Disc Copier opens with an Add Movies button which when pointed to the TS Folder on the DVD shows the VOB file & chapters as thumbnails. When I select any one & try to add the movie, it quickly goes through the title but does not add the thumbnail in the lower left window so that I can preview/trim it. Surprisingly, when I copy the VOB file to disk and rename it mpg, I can then Add Movies, create the title, and get the thumbnail to show so that I can edit it, but it's an extra step to copy & rename.
TS folders from DVDs other than my Sony DVD recorder DO bring up the thumbnail so I can then preview/trim it. There's something in the way my Sony is creating folders that is causing a problem. The discs are finalized so it's not that. Also Edit Video which opens Video Wave will add phot/video from my Sony with no problem.
The reason I was trying to do my editing with Disc Copier rather than Video wave is Disc Copier has a nice preview/trim window compared to Edit Video.
I can work around the problem by either copy/rename to mpg or else use Edit Video, which will bring in the VOB, and then trim it from within Video Wave. I just wanted to try & figure out why my Sony DVd was creating unloadable VOBs for Roxio Disc Copier (Compile Movies & Convert Video)

That is strange. I can't image what Sony would be doing different and the disc still be DVD compliant.
Just as a test - DO NOT use the HOME application. Open Media Import through the START menu and/or try Videowave through the START menu. I know it sounds odd, but some users have found problem when running those from the HOME app.

I did the test starting Disc Copier from the start menu, but get the same result. No thumbnail is added when I click on add movie, although all the VOB files are shown in the top window.
I can live with although since VideoWave add photo/video will add the VOB to the timeline, although I can't get chapters the way I would be able to with Disc Copier.
It's strange that Video Wave handles VOB, but Disc Copier sees them but won't add them & that this is only a problem with DVDs created on my Sony RW+ recorder, not purchased DVDs
I can live with it and have ordered EMC9 to replace the trial offer since Video Wave will let me preview/trim which is what I want to do, although not by chapter. I have to find the segment I want to trim from the entire movie and it's hard to scroll rapidly through a movie, even though I have an AMD 3700 system with Raptor discs...the slider isn't very responsive to scrolling

That has more to do with the fact that you are trying to edit compressed file. The file must be decompressed in memory before it can be displayed. This is THE main reason why I will never have a camcorder that records to MPEG. Editing is slow and recompressing the file can cause poorer quality. Maybe someday editing software will handle these files better.
