I recently purchased the easy media creator 9.  I have a new computer (never connected to the web so no virus or malware) running vista business.   there is a GEforce 7600 graphics card with vista drivers already installed.  My video connection is through an ADVC 55 firewire connection, not requiring any software.  I am able to capture with moviemaker and other softwares.  I purposely purchased this software for this intent.  When capturing, it appears to recognize the device, but when I click on the device that I want, it reads:

StringRef:AVCaptureErrorStrings.CaptureMAnagerBuild

In details, it reads:
Template Manager returned Error
Failed to detect which capture qualities are available for this device.
Failed to detect which capture qualities are available for this device.

Please help.  I tried calling customer support, but was on hold for 45 minutes.

That usually indicates an analog capture device that is not supported.  Searching the net, that is a Canopus device for analog to digital conversion. Unfortunately, analog capture through firewire doesn't work well in EMC even if through a digital camcorder.  You will need to use the capture software that came with the device or use other software.  YOu can capture in Windows Movie Maker and then "Save to this Computer' as DV AVI.  YOu might want to try WinDV which is shareware, but I don't know if it supports the device or not.

The ADVC 55 is an analog to digital converter...the signal through the firewire is digital, not analog.  It touts that you do not need any software, and can be stored as nearly any media file type, including avi.

I read what it says and that makes NO sense.  There HAS to be software.  They probably meant that it uses the firewire drivers built into Windows, but you would still need software that can capture from that device.

thanks for taking the time to answer this question.

According to the manual,
"ADC-55 allows to convert video data input from NTSC, SECAM, PAL to a DV output."  "There is no need for any driver installation or difficulty settings"

Why would this work on moviemaker but not on Roxio, if there is no digital output?  The whole purpose of this device is to change an analog input to digital output, prior to the firewire connection.

The manual even states to "begin capturing with an editing application on your computer" then it refers you to look at the manual for the editing application (ie roxio) to see how to get to the capture portion of the program.

It clearly states that the output is a DV output to the computer.

Don't think I say it any clearer.  THIS DEVICE IS NOT SUPPORTED.  You seem to think that just because it works in WMM, that any software should be able to capture from it.

Here is a list of supported devices for EMC9

As I posted earlier, you can use teh capture software that came with the card or use WMM to capture since that works.  Just use the WMM option to 'save to this computer' and output to DV AVI.  Videowave and MyDVD 9 will not have any problems with those files.

I just wanted to pipe-in on this one. Though it is frustrating for some folks (thinking of my father who has the same issue trying to capture/upload video from a new JVC camcorder he just bought) the fact is not any one software package is likely to be able to capture from all of the thousands of digital devices manufactured. The main premise of Roxio Easy Media Creator Suite 9, is to provide for the ability to edit/manipulate video and other media formats, not to be a catch-all (though that'd be nice) application for the myriad of devices manufactured out there.

In most instances the hardware device (in my father's instance a JVC Camcorder) will come with software to specifically capture video, audio etc from the hardware device. So once uploaded to your PC for example, it (your digital media) is then able to be recognized by Roxio Easy Media Creator Suite 9, for the purpose of editing/manipulating your media. Ultimately, who cares by what means your media is captured/uploaded, so long as it IS captured and made available for editing/manipulating via Roxio Easy Media Creator Suite 9. As I said to my father: Relax, enjoy smile.gif

My nephew and my daughter both have JVC Everio camcorder and just happens you really do NOT need 'capture' software for those camcorders.  The camcorder shows up in MY COMPUTER as an external hard drive.  Just copy the .MOD files to your internal hard drive using Explorer. Then rename the extension to .MPG and Videowave/MyDVD will use the files just fine.

Unfortunately, 'analog' capturing still is not universally supported in editing software - PCI, USB or firewire.
