Hmmmm......I'd bet they are using 3 or 4 year old DVD players. Unfortunately for them, DVD players have made great advancements in file formats they can read and their's probably is an older model that can't read the format used in the SlideShow you sent them.
If they are using older DVD players then it is time for them to get a new one.......they are relatively cheap now and the newer ones will eliminate that problem I am sure.

Wow, that's weird. I have read on many forums that what I stated is the common problem. Your's is a turnaround on the same theme.
When you say "froze", do you mean the DVD application froze or the computer froze or locked up after inserting the DVD?
There was a similar post over in the AfterDawn forums about putting a DVD into the drive and it locked up the computer. After Googling the symptom, I got tons of info and posted such in that forum for possible causes and solutions. Let us know.

The picture just stopped... like it was on pause
last night I tried it on my other DVD player/recorder - it would not play the DVD at all...
gave me an error saying it could not play or record the disk

Ok, after Googling your symptom, got tons of hits, a big problem with "Pauses" and "Lockups" while playing a DVD are caused by heat. Some remove the DVD case to confirm. Using labels on a DVD can cause the player to generate more heat........don't use labels.
Read this post http://forums.support.roxio.com/index.php?showtopic=15366 .......scroll down to the "Disc Copier" section and do a burn using this method and settings. See if you eliminate your pauses and inability to play on some DVDs.
Here are a couple of links to posts that may help you on DVDs not being able to play on some DVD Set Players:
