I'm using Backup MyPC 6.0 on Windows XP. Was working fine, backing up to DDS4 tapes. I normally schedule one weekly FULL backup, followed by Incrementals onto the same tape.
I temporarily turned on "Sharing" on my hard drive, as I was using my local area network to set up and copy directories over to another PC. I've now since turned off that sharing, as far as I know returning the sharing conditions back to original state.
Now, at least 30 random files report backup failures both during backup and subsequent compare, such as:
Error: C:\WINDOWS\NOTEPAD.EXE - access denied
All the files listed I can open and use, no problems, I've rebooted many times, there are no other applications or users blocking these files. It happens to directories as well as individual files. I've used right-mouse File-Properties menu, changed attributes manually, no problems!
This happens in both interactive an unattended backup modes.
I'm very concerned that my backup is now shot full of holes!
How can I fix this? Any hints?

This is pure guesswork, but you might try deleting the jobs for your backups. Close BUMP, reopen and rebuild the backup jobs. I am wondering if somewhere in the job itself, it has kept track of the sharing, and now that it has changed, it is screwed up. Also on your jobs, in the More Options - Advanced tab, make sure Backup busy files is checked. It may still think the files are in use.
Then start with a full backup to make sure you don't have any holes.
No guarantee, but hope it works for you.

Thanks very much for your hint and guess. I've set up new backup jobs, made sure "busy" option was enabled, but unfortunately still getting the same failures! It did not seem to make any difference.

Are you backing up under the administrator account? If not you need to be. Other than that, the only other things I can think of is that these files are still flagged somehow as shared. Either that or the files it is trying to back up are the ones on the other system it still thinks is there. Do you still have any of the shared drive mapping on your system?
These are all pure guesswork as I have never had a second system or need to try the share options and never encountered these problems.

I am using my own login, not Administrator, but my account has full administrator rights. This set up was working fine for the many months before the "sharing" incident.
All of that sharing is now turned off. The other system is not accessing anything. It's been several months since that event, with numerous reboots, etc. I fear I might have caused MS XP Pro sharing to have left things in some corrupted state that I cannot see any way to reverse.

Sorry I couldn't help more. They only thing I can suggest is try the backup under administrator and see if it makes any difference. I know you have the rights, but there may be something under your user id that is causing this.

Actually there is no such thing as "Adminstrator" login, mine is the 1st one established apon installation to be the admin account, so I don't have this option.
BTW, I'm using BackUp MyPC, Version 6.0.0, Build 600B83J (ROX)
