Capture Device

I had EMC 7.5 on my system(Dell 8400 running Windows XP Home Edition) Still indicates I have it in my change/remove programs-that's another issue in another forum section.
I did a clean install of EMC 9.0 and at this point at least I can open it-The issue for now is that when I attempt to transfer a digital mini tape over to a DVD Roxio is not reading the capture device. There is nothing in the drop down list indicating the camera is even hooked up to the computer-which it is.
I had this same problem with EMC 7.5 before I switch over to EMC 9.0
Any thoughts/suggestions on what to do or maybe what I am not doing correctly???
Thanks again for the help!!

Connect the camcorder and turn it to 'playback' mode.
You should hear a sound from Windows if it is recognized.
Right click on MY COMPUTER and select MANAGE.
In the left pane, click on Device manager.
In the Right pane, click on the + beside Imaging Devices
Is your camcorder listed there? IF not, then EMC can not access it.
There is also a known problem with certain Canon models.

Thanks for the info-I checked what camera's EMC 9 supported and the 2 digital handy cams I have are not- EMC 7.5 worked with both camera's-Just curious why would they change software so as not to support certain camera's??

What camcorder do you have? Does Windows recognize it and/or does it work with Windows Movie Maker?

I have the Sony DCR-TRV38 and the Sony DCR-HC21-The strange thing is that I tried to download Windows Movie maker and it does not even show up in my program list-I am thinking of uninstalling EMC 9.0 and starting over with 7.5. Any thoughts on this??
Thanks again for your input!!

Thanks again for your input!!
I have both EMC 7.5 and EMC 9 installed. I had to uninstall EMC 7.5, install EMC 9, then install EMC 7.5 again, to get them both to work properly.
I had EMC 7.5 on my computer, then installed EMC 9, and I had problems with both versions. That could be part of your problem, too.

I did a clean installation of EMC 9.0 and reinstalled it-When I go into my programs it shows EMC 7.5 as being empty-Checking add/remove programs it shows EMC 7.5 as taking up space on my system. So should I go back in and delete all the files on both EMC 7.5 & 9.0 and start over??

You can also try downloading from the internet a shareware app called WinDV. All it does is capture from firewire.
Also did you connect one of the camcorders and see if it shows up in the Device Manager like it should?

If your camcorder(s) do not show up in the Device Manager, then EMC will not be able to access it. Make sure the camcorder is properly connected via firewire. Also use the AC power adapter for the camcorder just in case it is a battery problem. The camcorder must be turn on to the 'playback' mode. On my Sony, it is labelled as 'VCR' mode. You should hear a sound from Windows that tells you that it recognizes the camcorder and a window should pop-up asking you to choose an app for capturing.
If this does NOT happen, then there is a connection problem. Make sure the firewire cable is fully inserted at both ends. If that doesn't help, you may need a new firewire cable. NOTE: FIREWIRE cable. Not USB!

Thanks for your help and also to the tech's who made suggestions-I now have been able to get Windows to recognize the camcorder so I'm half way to where I need to be-wherever that is!!!!

Just wanted to give you folks an update on my challenges with being able to burn, etc. Success was reached today and I was able to burn about 3 hours of digital mini tape over to DVD without any problems-went very well without a glitch!!
Thanks again for the advice and I am sure I will be back asking for more answers to my questions!!
