EMC9 Almost completely working on Vista

Before my first install, I uninstalled the Sonic/Roxio software that was factory installed. Everything Seemingly went normal on the first install. Note: Norton was running during that install. Like many, I experienced the DLA error but just ignored it for a bit since the test of D2D went well. Since I don't really need that function, I just uninstalled it and the problem went away.
Upon Initial install, Two other problems were experienced:
1.) My DVD was not functional because VideoWave would not load. (My DVD Express worked fine).
2.) PhotoSuite 9 Loads, but none of the editing tools are functioning. Can load pictures, but not edit.
I next tried a complete uninstall and reinstall, this time turning off Norton. Same results, Same problems.
Next, I went to the control panel and tried a repair of EMC9. After a reboot, the My DVD program loaded and gave me no VideoWave errors. Ahhhh, 1 problem fixed, however, the PhotoSuite 9 problem still exists.
I appologize for the length of this post, but am wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem with PS9, or better yet, can shed some light on what might fix it?
I have installed EMC on my HP ZD8000 running XP Media center and everything works fine on it, so I know the software works, but not totally on my Vista machine.
Another question that is in my mind, and I base this on the many different problems others have experienced, is: Is it possible the there are different revisions of EMC on the market causing a variety of problems.
Any help I can get on this forum will be greatly appreciated, since my two support tickets have gone unanswered.

I'm running EMC9 Deluxe on a Dell Insprion 9300 with Vista Ultimate. I hadn't used PS before, but I just tried it and it seems to work fine. I loaded a picture, tried several of the tools under "Photo"-->Fix, Tools, and Enhance and they all worked. So, I can confirm that PS9 works under Vista Ultimate.
One suggestion would be to open PS from the "All Programs" menu rather than from "Roxio Home". There have been several posts related to problems with some of the EMC9 applications not functioning properly when launched from "Roxio Home".
As far as the different problems that many people are expeiencing, AFAIK, there are two EMC9 versions; EMC9 and EMC9 Deluxe. Now, there are also quite a few OEM versions as well, which are provided by companies like Dell, HP, etc., but these should be based on the two official packages from Roxio/Sonic (based on, but likely stripped of some functionality).
Personally, I think many of the different problems seen are more likely based on things like (but not limited to):
Vista Version Installed
Vista Updates Installed
Whether UAC was on/off during installation of EMC9
Whether an antivirus/firwall program was active during installation of EMC9
Computer Hardware and Vista compatible drivers for that hardware

Thanks for the insight Lee, I try opening it from the all programs menu and see if that works.

Hi RPG,
When you say "accessible", do you mean that, after loading a photo, the options under Photo-->Fix, Tools, and Enhance are greyed out? What about the options under Transform for rotating or flipping the photo? Are you opening a file from your hard drive or importing directly from your camera? What file format are you opening?
When I tried PS yesterday, I was opening one of the sample JPGs that comes with Vista. Let me know what you're trying to open and I'll give it a go here.

I was loading a jpg photo of mine from the hard drive. Everything under the Transform menu works fine. It is the Fix, Tools and Enhance choices under the photo Menu, nor will they expand from the Common/All tabs. The Open/Create commands are the only one that works in both places. There is no greying out, they just do not fuction, i.e. I can select fix, Tools, Enhance, but the menu will not expand to show the choices.
Thank you for the assistance.

Well, I was hoping that this was related to some sort of permissions problem. I created a new, non admin, user on my system, logged in as that user, opened PS9, and opened a RO jpg and everything still worked. Of course, I couldn't save the changes to the file (I had to use Save As..).
the fact that your Fix, Tools, and Enhance menus are not greyed out, but rather, seem to be missing all together, leads me to believe it's an installation problem. Give this a shot: (I just went through this procedure and PS9 is working. Of course, it was working before as well
Make sure your account has Admin privledges
Disable UAC and Norton
Open Control Panels--> Programs & Features
Highlight Roxio Easy Media Creator 9 Suite and select "Change"
In the EMC9 InstallShield wizard, select "Modify"
Click on Photosuite and select "This feature will not be available"
On the right side of the wizard, it should say: "This featrue frees up 82MB on your hard drive"
When the wizrd is finished, it will ask you to reboot - DON'T REBOOT
Highlight Roxio Easy Media Creator 9 Suite and select "Change"
In the EMC9 InstallShield wizard, select "Modify"
Click on Photosuite and select "This feature and all subfeatures will be installed on the local hard drive"
On the right side of the wizrd, it should say that "This featrue requires 82MB on your hard drive"
For "File Associations", I only selected PSPD (since I prefer other programs for general photo editing)
Finish the install wizard and reboot.
Regarding not rebooting after the PS uninstall, if you have the EMC9 CDs, then go ahead and reboot. If you only have the downloaded EXE files, you may have some trouble re-installing only PS, since the temporary install directory is cleared on a reboot. I only have the downloaded EXE files, and when I rebooted, and tried to reinstall PS only, the installer couldn't find the MSI files, so I had to uninstall the whole suite and reinstall it (live and learn).
Hopefully, just kicking the PS install will do the trick for you.
Good Luck!

I just tried what you recommended (I have the CD), and ended up with the same results. One other thing I should have mentioned is that when PS loads, The only option under open/create is OPEN. Also, none of the tools are expanded. On my XP machine, when it loads, all edit tools are expanded but greyed until you open a pic...as it should be. It is though the program on my Vista machine cannot find all of it's resources.
The reason I was asking about different versions early on, was that I purchased this at Sam's Club and who knows how long it was sitting on their shelf. When I check the About under the Help menu, mine lists this as version 9.0.88 ENU Build 900B88F, R03. This makes me wonder if the version being downloaded is newer. Maybe not, but the question is in my mind and there is no indication on the roxio site regarding updates.
I guess it is also possible there is some other software conflict going on here, however, I have not added much that didn't come with the computer and I have even tried uninstalling what was added before reinstalling EMC the second time. So far everything I have tried has given the same results.
I may try another complete uninstall and reinstall before I give up, but not today as I have other chores to tend to.
Thanks again for your help Lee, it is very much appreciated

Outside of the EMC 9 Deluxe version being added to the line, there have been no changes to EMC 9 since it came out last Fall.

Are you a roxio employee or part of the support team? Just wondering how you know this.
In any case, I just finished my third, and last uninstall and reinstall, and the results are exactly the same. Either I have a software conflict, or there is most definately something wrong with EMC and Vista. My machine is an HP dv2000 less than 3 months old with barely more than the software it came with, so I'm sorta doubtful it is a software conflict. I've installed my share of software over the years, and this has caused more problems than all other problems combined. What hacks me off the most is that roxio support has not answered two support ticket I have opened and from what I can observe on this site, they don't seem to want to get involved and help people with their problems. Maybe I'm wrong about this, but I get the impression that they are counting on other helpful folks to do their work. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate hearing from anyone here that can make suggestions to resolve issues.
I think at this point, I'll just avoid the PhotoSuite program as the rest of EMC is working and hope that time will produce a solution to this problem.
Thanks,

Hi RPG,
I have the downloaded version of EMC9 Deluxe, and when I open check "About...":
Easy Media Creator 9 (Build 906B 10N ENU)
and if I look at the Photosuite9 executable and its related DLL files, they are all 9.0.5.78
In one of my previous posts, I said there were only 2 versions; EMC9 and EMC9 Deluxe (plus the plethora of OEM versions that may or may not include all of the same functionality). But, this reminds me of something else. When I purchased EMC8 some years ago, at some point, there was a major upgrade (I don't recall the exact version) that fixed many problems running under XP and added some functionality. There was talk about this release for some time, and when it was finally available, I (and many others), discovered that the upgrade would only work on the CD version of EMC8. If you downloaded EMC8, you had to wait for a different version of the upgrade, which I'm not sure was ever released.
The reason I bring this up is that there were obviously differences in the EMC8 CD version and EMC8 download version. There may also be differences in the EMC9 and EMC9 Deluxe CD versions compared to the download versions. I was thinking we could start looking at the files in your Photosuite9 folder (to see if there were any missing compared to what I have), but, since you have the CD version and I have the download version, there may be differences anyway.
Regarding Roxio Trouble Tickets, I had the same experience when I was using EMC8. I found these forums and haven't submitted a ticket to Roxio since. When I was using EMC8, I wrote off the lack of responses to trouble tickets to the immenent merger between Roxio and Sonic, but from what I've read around the forums, it seems Roxio still needs to bolster their support team a bit.
Anyway, if you want to continue hacking away at this, we can have a look at registry entries and look to see if there are DLL files not being installed. But, I'm not sure if there will be much benefit, since I'm running Vista Ultimate and the downloaded version of EMC9 Deluxe and you're running Home Premium with the CD verion of EMC9.

Thanks for the offer Lee, but I think I'll just hang loose on this since everything is working on my XP machine and usually use it for photo editing anyway. I may be wrong on there being different Rev's out there to EMC, But having been a Mac Tech for 8 years, I know how software companies sneak little fixes in and if one in the support business lacks the resources to get fixes and patches that are not otherwise available to the general public, they never know,...I'm talking about bug fixes between official releases.
It really is a shame that roxio doesn't offer good support as other software companies do.
Thanks again for your interest and help.

Nope, not a Roxio employee or part of any support team. If there were changes in the regular (not Deluxe) version of EMC 9, there would be a patch on their main website. I don't see any there.
I maintain that it isn't a good idea to load Vista, or any other new OS, until it has been out for 6 months to a year. Hopefully, I won't ever have to load it on my computer. XP is rock solid for me.

Yeah, I didn't see any patches there either and have been checking daily since I installed EMC, but past experience tells me that little tweaks here and there DO happen, which is why I posted my version info, Maybe I'm wrong, and then maybe I'm not, time will tell.
I made sure the product I purchased was labled Compatible with Microsoft Windows Vista, seems to me I have a right to expect it to work as advertised. I think roxio would get kind of concerned if everybody waited 6 months before making a purchase. I can think of no other software that I have purchased that I had to wait to 6 months from release to get a good working copy. Usually companies that operate that way don't really do well in the long haul. Also might add that every other software company I had to resolve issues with responded quickly with a solution. That has not been my experience with roxio. But, I Will just suck it up and use the program sans photo editing until better options come along. One other note, I didn't load Vista on this computer, It was a new computer and came with it already loaded.

When XP came out, drivers were pretty rare to get both hardware and software up and running correctly. It was an effort between Microsoft and other companies to get things working.
Microsoft has survived, and I bet that you waited well over 6 months to get a good working copy that didn't break other software on your computer and worked with all of your hardware.

Another post I read went into great detail about how CDRW discs are made and that they are not to be used as a big Floppy Disc & are unreliable anyway?
Well to sum up here If EMC9 is Vista compatible (I say it ain't) It should work fine with IE7 & MP 11. I believe Roxio makes software to be Microsoft compatible not the other way around!
The DLA issue perhaps is a mistake by someone else, but lets get it fixed and get back to helping people instead of playing the "It's Microsofts fault"
PS I use CDRW's as a big floppy disc and if Roxio is supplying Drag to Disc it should work!

Well, in my case, I never had any problems with XP, and every piece of software I use worked well with it as did my hardware. Also, I was not referring to Microsoft in my previous statement.

But, I was.

Bob,
I just completed the rather lengthy procedure to do a clean Install as noted on the forum. I was reluctant to do it for fear something else would get messed up, but decided to do it anyway.
I followed the procedure to the letter and ALL my problems went away. As of this moment, everything seems to be working correctly and my PhotoSuite program is working.
I would recommed that anyone having problems with Vista to follow the clean install instructions verbatim, It worked for me and I didn't have much faith that it would, but I was wrong.

RPG,
Nothing feels better than when a stubborn computer issue gets solved. Very glad it worked. The Clean install you refer to is a re-install of Vista I assume?
