I have successfully ripped some audio from some music dvd's i own. I then tried ripping the bonus audio tracks from the just released and remastered Depeche Mode albums that come with a special dvd. The dvd has the bonus audio tracks in 5.1 (24bit 96khz and dolby digital 5.1 surround (24 bit). When i try ripping these tracks all i get is terrible distortion and fuzz. I have tried ripping into wav (16bit 44.1) and MP3 at 320. I have XXXXX to get rid of any copy protection so it is not that issue. Is it because there is no actual regular stereo track to rip only the 5.1? All i want to do is rip a stereo audio file so i can burn it to cd so I can DJ with the track.
Any suggestions or observations?

thanks,
dj lazarus

Edited to take out the name of the program that breaks copy protection.  Even though we don't necessarily agree with copy protection laws, we don't post info about programs that do it.

No problem. I wasn't trying to advertise said program. I was just giving as much information as possible to have my problem hopefully solved by some of the knowledgeable people on this forum.

P.S. I do think copy protection/drm is only punishing those who paid good money for their cds/dvds. I paid for software that helps eliminate the hurdles that try to stop me from using my purchased music and dvds the way I wish.

Did you try bringing those files into Sound Editor?  You can import from CD/DVD.  If they sound okay in Sound Editor, you can export them as .wav files.

The distorted sound you are hearing is typical of DTS.  You will have to convert that to 2 channel and probably 16bit44.1khz WAV files before then converting to mp3 or CD-Audio discs.

I was using the 'sound editor', but to no avail. Just amplified distortion.

Thanks. Now my question is; how do i turn it into a 2 channel audio file? I know i have to convert it to 16bit 44.1khz to put it onto cd, but i can't even get to that stage. Is there a way to convert to 2 channel in EMC9 or some other software you know of? I also will do a search online and see what i can find.

D-a-m-n.  I am not sure that anything will do it, then.  You could take a look at GoldWave.  It may do the conversion.  I know that some of the folks, who post here, have used it when the Roxio software can't do something with sound files.

Problem solved through lots of trial and error with lots of different software combinations.
Solution:
1. I used DVD Audio Extractor 4.2.1 software to rip the DTS audio files from the DVD into a wav.
(these wav files sometimes worked in a media player but not all the time)
2. I then opened the wav file into Sony Soundforge 8.0d. After it analyzed the file i then saved it as a new wav file.
Presto a beautiful sounding wav file from a DTS DVD that i can now burn to cd or convert to mp3.

Maybe this info can be posted somewhere for other people that are having this problem.

(The wav files EMC9 was making do NOT work in Soundforge or any mediaplayer they are just distortion)

Thanks for posting your solution.  If EMC 9 can't do something, there is usually no problem posting the name of the software that can, unless the software is for breaking encryption. smile.gif
