Why are DVD Recorders better at burning than EMC 7?

Most (or is it all?) DVD recorders can burn up to 8 hours onto a DVD without any trouble, whereas EMC 7 struggles to burn more than a couple of hours onto a DVD.

Is it deliberate? In which case, why?

Is the software inferior to that on DVD recorders? Again, in which case, why?

It's an tradeoff of video quality vs. time recorded. Check the documentation on the DVD recorder and I think you'll find that they explain that.

Yes, I realise that there's no such thing as a free lunch, but my point is that if you're willing to accept an inferior quality a DVD recorder will allow you to put 8 hours on a DVD; Roxio software won't.

For example, sad person that I am

, I record The Simpsons, which is broadcast on Channel 4 in the UK. I can put 10 programmes on a DVD, which is about 3.5 hours, and the quality is perfectly acceptable. I can even put 6 episodes of Lost on DVD (about 4 hours without the adverts) and the quality is OK for this purpose. My question is, if my DVD recorder can do it, whay can't EMC 7?
