Hi folks,

I just changed my DVD burner and I am wondering how to make/force EMC9 to see my new burner with the new spcifications. Would anyone know how? I did a search but did not find anything that relate to my situation. I'm certain someone else went through that in the past, so I am hoping to get some indications.

Thanks a lot folks!!

You shouldn't have to do anything. If the new DVD burner is available in MY COMPUTER, then EMC 9 should be able to use it. Parts of EMC 'talks' to the firmware of the burner to get info like what media is inserted and what speed that media can burned.

Nothing is needed, as long as Windows picks it up, EMC should as well. Are you having problems getting EMC to work with it? Maybe the pxengine patch will help.

Was the burner installed while EMC9 was open? Maybe give EMC9 a chance to recognize it by closing the app and then opening it again.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

So, here is what I did:

Uninstalled the previous DVD burner in the hardware manager and shut down the system.
Removed the old, installed the new DVD burner (LG DVD-RAM GSA-H50N) and booted up.
BIOS saw the drive correctly. Rebooted to windoze. wink.gif
Hardware manager saw the drive correctly, so did it appear in My Computer.
Launched EMC9. Open Tools/Options/Advanced: It only gives a speed choice of 1X. sad.gif
Went into Tools/Disk Information (Left pane): It gives the correct drive info.
I downloaded and installed the patch that was suggested by Beerman and rebooted the system.

Still no changes. So I am wondering if I will have to do a clean install again? blink.gif Anything else I should try? If anyone has other suggestions, I will gladly try them out.

Thanks in advance!
Serge

Put a disc in the drive and see if that changes. At elast, yo will know if the app is recognizing the drive or not.

Mmmm... OK... Tried that last night with "some" success. While running the "Do More" option, I could the test read going up close to 16X. When I checked back in the Initial Open Tools/Options/Advance, I now have a choice up to 8X for the DVD. Woopie! wink.gif So, it looks like "maybe" EMC9 now correctly sees the DVD drive. I will have to test it with an actual burn session and see if I can produce good burns or more ocaters. wink.gif

The Specs are the following:

Thanks for all you assistance!

Just remember... EMC gets the info ABOUT the media from the drive. The drive gets the info from THE DISC. To burn at 16X, you need a disc that has been certified for 16X burning. Some drives 'may' allow burning at higher speeds. Most won't though.

Thanks ggrussell. Indeed, once I inserted a disk, the app. would provide me with additional burning speed option. I usually burn at half the speed just to be on the safe side.

I did a full uninstall and clean install again, as I did in the past. I am now able to correctly burn single layer DVDs. But as for double layer disks, I am still generating expensive coasters. Just a few minutes ago, I tried to burn with a Memorex DL DVD+R DL... Coaster. I tried with a Verbatin DVD+R DL... another coaster. This is getting old. sad.gif

I am getting at the end of my rope with DL disks burning.

Check the website of your burner. The manufacturers usually have a list of recommended media or media that has been tested on those burners.

Also while you're there look to see what the latest version of the firmware is for that drive. If it's newer than what you have download it and flash you're drive.LG's site should have directions on how to do it.

Tell us every detail about burning the DL disc.

C, Documents and Settings, your user or all user, Application Data, Roxio, Dragon, 3.x, Device Detection Log & Write logs.

The write log will show your burns, successful and failure, post one for the DL failure. The Device Detection Log will show media placed in the burner and read by the firmware back to the software. Post the top part drive, firmware, and detection of the DL disc that failed.

Copy and paste a log file for the DL media. A new session starts over with the word (Roxio).

From a link, that was provided on this board, Memorex is not necessarally the best media, but the Varbatim media are in the "First Class" category.

As for the firmware, it is revision 1.0 for the GSA H50N. This is a new model and last time I verified, LG had no firmware updates yet for that DVD burner.

The drive is set for DMA access, like all my other drives. I have some details in the DrWatson error log files, but that thing is HUGE. I will be digging into it and try to make sense of it all.

Before any burn session, I clean all the "temp" directories, perform a "disk cleanup", "disk defrag" and run Registry Mechanic, to ensure nothing is left to chance.

Except for doing a full OS and application re-install, or getting a new PC, I am running out of options.

Thanks for "listening" to my venting off....

EDIT: Spelling correction.
