Conflicting Help Instruction & DirectX

“Working with markers in the Timeline view
To delete a section of your production between two markers:
1. Add a marker at the beginning and end of the section to be deleted.
2. Click the marker at the beginning of the section.
3. Press Ctrl and click the marker at the end of the section.
4. On the Timeline marker track, click – (minus).”
Zap Commercials from Recording reads:
“First, import your media files into a VideoWave project, and add chapter markers on the timeline at the beginning and end of the commercial sections by clicking on the + button at the top left. Then click between the two markers to join them and delete the joined video using the multi-trim button (just to the right of the + button).”
I cannot get method #1 to work at all. Method #2 works one time and then the next time it adds something(?), at least the production length ends up longer and the commercial I tried to zap is still there. I have given up on making heads or tails of what it does to the file.
Is this because I do not have DirectX on my computer? I can't find it and I think I read a post that says you have to have it. There seems to be several versions available.
Does it make any difference which version I download??
Thanks for any help.

The Help section is WRONG.
Open your Videowave project and switch to Timeline
move the blue line at beginning of commercial
click the '+'
move blue line to end of commercial
click the '+'
Now click between the two markers and they should be connected by a line
Then click the -x- icon

Thanks! I have DirectX and assume its current. Appears I have version 9.0c but note website has version 9.18.944 dated 4/10/07 but title includes "web installer". Does this make any difference or is this the latest version? Download file appears to be same for both versions.
Knowing that Help is wrong is very disconcerting! How much else of help is wrong or misleading? And why isn't a correction made or publicized? I find the help section to be very, very confusing at the least.
I would appreciate the answer to one more question as it would help to know if my program is operating correctly. When you zap an ad, should the time length shown for the production be reduced by the amount of time for the ad that you zapped and the ad should no longer appear on the timeline?
Thanks in advance.

First, this is a users forum, and the folks here are not Roxio. You could contact them directly, and ask them about the help files.
If you zap an ad, it should not still be showing in Timeline. The time should be reduced, but that isn't a given.

Hey, Grandpa Bruce, I don't need the chastising. I maybe a newbie to EMC9 but not to computers or forums. That was a legitimate question/comment when told that the help instructions for a very important program function is wrong. And getting any help or information from Roxio is almost impossible! I already have two unanswered tickets.
The fact is I paid almost $100 dollars for a program that I can't get to work on my computer. It installed with absolutely no problem (3 times). You can mark and join with no problem. But when you press the multi-trim button, the results are not as they should be, i.e., the video between the markers was NOT deleted, but the production WAS effected, to what extent is hard to determine.
Now, if this forum is not the place to get information or help for this, then, excuse me!!

I wasn't chastizing you at all. There is no tone inflection in posts, so I am sorry if you took it the wrong way.

It doesn't work for me. I have before & after pictures but don't know how to send them.
Production length before multitrim: 56:14.12
Begin mark: 6:21.05 End mark: 9:39.22 Duration joined: 3:18+
Production length after multitrim: 56:07.04 Duration trim: 7+ seconds
Commercial now begins at: 6:21.04 (same as in beginning)
Commercial now ends at: 9:30 approx for a duration of 3:09 or about 9 seconds short of original.
Marked this begin and end, joined and multitrimmed.
Production length after this multitrim: 53:04.19
Duration trimmed: 3:03 approx
SURPRISE!! But this duration was trimmed from the 1st clip not the second.
The commercial is still there but now runs from 3:11.27 to 6:28.04!!!!
Go figure! Doesn't that beat all? I don't know what to do next. Has to be something on my computer that is causing the problem.
Any suggestions? Thanks

Sorry about that. Shouldn't have taken offense at something so minor. I apologize.
I have spent 3 days on this and 3 installs and no response from Roxio to 2 tickets. So I am totally frustrated. See my reply post to ggrussell for this one (identified) problem. I am too old for this aggravation and don't have the time for this crap.
If you can point me toward any possible solution, it would be very much appreciated. I am going to give it the weekend and if not resolved, return the program. Maybe try Ulead.
Have a good day!

Wow, what you did should work. Here is another way to try it. Slide the marker to the beginning point of what you want to remove. Right click, at that point, and click on Split. Now, move to the end of the portion you want to delete, right click, and click on Split. Now, left click on that portion you want deleted, then hit your delete key. Hopefully, that will get rid it.

By George, Bruce, I think you've done it!!!
As it's said, there are more ways then one to skin a cat. My problem was that I was hung up on geting that particular function to work and lost sight of what I was attempting to accomplish, i.e., getting rid of commercials in my video. You brought me back to reality, and thanks alot! I did a couple splits and deletes and it worked perfectly.
Hindsight tells me that I should have thought of that becuase that is the method I used in Sonic MyDVD 7, on vidio captured in that program. The problem was that it was a stripped down version and wouldn't handle "fit to disc" format(?), said you had to purchase the upgrade. Win's MCE seems to record only in that format so I couldn't edit anything captured there, and that is the reason I purchased EMC9.
So thanks again! Oh, one last thing. I am not going to persue the problem further with Roxio because I don't see the point. From all indications, their instructions for the procedure are incorrect to begin with and the alternate procedure pickedup from the forum just doesn't work on my computer.
Regards,
ERay

You're welcome. I am glad it worked, but the way Gary does it, should have worked, too. I am just stuck on the right click method of editing, because I have done it through 3 versions of the software, now.

Golly Gee, where do you guys find all this stuff???
Grandpabruce basically said the same thing. See my reply to him.
Now maybe I can get some work done. I have 12 hours of Galapagos and Planet Earth to edit and burn to DVD's.
My sincere thanks to the both of you.
