I just added a folder with 4,500 files, with no problem. It almost sounds like an issue with your video card. I am not sure, but make sure that you have the latest video drivers installed.

You're right in that the number of files itself is not sufficient to cause the problem - I can open it in my Windows directory that has twice the number of files with no problem. My guess is something is overflowing - not sure if it's the size of the files that's causing a problem. How big were the 4.500 files in your folder? So far the problem only occurs in this one directory where I archive large program installation/setup/msi files. When this problem occurs, even attempting a "Help" operation returns a cryptic message about not being able to contact the server on the Internet.
It would be mindboggling that Creator Classic had an issue with the video card while My DVD and other video related programs have no problem with it whatsoever. It sounds much more likely to be a buffer overflow of some kind where adjacent memory has been corrupted. The dump that is produced shows the error in the main program (Creator9.exe) and not referencing a video dll. I am also running a modern driver version.

As GPB suggested, make sure your video drivers are up to date.

They are up to date... and I really am not trying to argue about this... My original post was asking if anyone else had seen this problem... GPB's response was helpful in that the number of files was not causing the problem which I confirmed but I wondered if anyone else had seen the problem I described when using Creator Classic...

Some of the files that I added were in excess of 15MB. Are you running Vista?

Others don't have this problem so it is specific to your PC/installation…
I have seen Classic take a long time to run through a directory that large but have sent it into directories that have 2 or 3 times that number of files.

Actually, the Property box you showed for 1.5GB includes the directory and all subdirectories - I know subdirectories are not the problem since C:\ has no problem and the offending directory is under C:\ file system. And the "+" sign tells me that Russell Photos has subdirectories. Can you tell me how many files are in Russell Photos directly? Just open an explorer window at that location and look at the bottom which gives you an object count. My 362 files take up 1.48 GB...
Thanks,

Sounds like you have a corrupt file somewhere. That has happened to me lately. I had a bad AVI capture and every time I used Windows Explorer to navigate to that folder, Explorer would crash. Since I knew which file it was, I had to run CMD line to delete the file.

Magnetic media uses FATx or NTFS. What you can do with those files systems has absolutely nothing to do with what you are allowed to do with Optical media file systems!
Optical media uses CDFS or UDF for its' file system. The most lenient system under CDFS is Joliet. It was written for Win3x, Win9x.
Since you are using V9, I strongly recommend you shift to UDF, No Bridge for your file system. Otherwise even when you get this problem under control, you are going to run into a brick wall using Joliet.
Try setting that, File – Project Settings, and clear the 3 checkmarks in that screen too.

Open Creator Classic, select Windows\System32, after the window finishes loading select the folder System 32 in the folder window, right click it and tell me if you get a menu.
Thanks,

Another one I tried, with 3500 files, took 6 seconds…
Of course I always have mine set to Details. If you are using Thumbnails and there are graphic files, it will take longer to build the thumbnails. Although in the System32 directory, it only took a hair over 1 second.
Why don't you list out all your PC specs like most of us have in our signature so we can see what is causing your performance problems. You have been focusing on proving it is 'faulty software' and it is time to move in the right direction.

I think even though it seems like it finishes loading, it's still processing files in the background. I usually have to wait about 5 or 10 seconds before I see any failures...

So do I.

I think that's a mischaracterization - clearly it's faulty software somewhere. If no one else seems to be having problems with large directories, then it must be something relatively unique with my setup. Programs should not trap and abort for "performance reasons". I'll post my specs, but I doubt they will shed any light anywhere.

It might have something to do with running NIS 2007.

Sounds possible although I don't know what to do about it if it's the problem. Temporarily turning off Auto-Protect had no effect...
Another interesting piece of information is that if I change my view to Thumbnails, then I have no problem. Both List and Details do have the problem and the only thing in common is the small icons. Maybe I have a bad icon somewhere although I tried the TweakUI "Repair Icon" which seemed to have no effect but again I don't know which icons it repairs....

He'll also have to Turn off "Cache Thumbnails" otherwise it, ► "Thumbs.db" will just reappear the next time he goes into that directory.
