Both these stop EMC8 from working and will have to be removed

Okay, I've removed both the Windows Media Player 11 and Windows Explorer 7. Then I tried using the EMC8, but I had the same problem: as soon as I clicked on "Add Photo/Video" the program stopped responding, and I had to close it using the Windows Task Manager.

At this point you want to go to the Control Panel – Add Remove Programs, select Roxio and try the Repair option.
This may be enough to get it running again but it may require uninstall/reboot/reinstall.

I followed the instructions: Removed Internet Explorer 7 and Windows Media Player 11 and Repaired EMC8.
Then I restarted the computer. This did not help. I'm still getting the same black rectangle staring back at me. I'll try the uninstall, reboot, reinstall sequence, but by now I'm very skeptical.
I doubt that the problem is caused by anything on my computer because my older version (Roxio EMC5) is working just fine. I really liked the additional features in EMC8, so I want to make it work again.

But you said that you used the software successfully for a year, already. It doesn't work now. And you say you doubt the problem is being caused by anything on your computer?

A few days ago, I wanted to create another slide show in EMC8, but it wouldn't let me pick up any photos or videos. Nothing but the black rectangle in the middle of the VideoWave. None of the buttons reacted to clicking or waiting a long time for a reaction.
I took the advice given, but I have not been able to get anything to work. I certainly haven't dismissed the idea that something in my file system may be stopping the EMC8 from picking up files, but I haven't been able to isolate the problem.

I had already installed Internet Explorer 7
Please read the pinned notes - IE7 DOES wreck EMC8 and earlier (along with WMP11)

You can always use system restore back to that date.
Also make sure that your video drivers have not become corrupt. Download and install the latest video drivers even if you had already done that. You may have to delete the current drivers and then install the new ones.

I believe I've isolated the problem: It has something to do with my EMC8 Media Manager on my computer.
I've installed the EMC8 on my laptop where it works perfectly. I do not want to use the laptop to produce my DVD though. My desktop is much more convenient as far as the monitor, scanner, etc. as concerned.
If recall correctly, I clicked on the "organize" function one day and opened the Media Manager. I was soon overwhelmed and closed it without doing anything. It seems that the production editor in the VideoWave hasn't worked properly since then. (Unfortunately, I don't remember whether I tried this before or after the last successful show.)
Also, when I first transferred files to the external hard drive in February '07, I got the "Confirm Stream Loss" Message referred to in a Technote posted on Mar 13, 2006 by patatrox. That's why I converted the External to NTFS and stopped watching the folders in the Media Manager Services.
What other magic do I have to perform to get my VideoWave production editor to recognize my media???

Addendum:
I tried the Photo Editor, and it worked just fine; however, even after repair and restart, the VideoWave refused to budge. Upon closing it with the Windows Task Manager, an error message was saved under WERecbe.dir00\VideoWave8.exe.mdmp

I am frustrated beyond screaming! Conservatively speaking, I've uninstalled, rebooted, reinstalled the EMC8 at least 6 times, including once on my laptop where it works perfectly.
Strangely enough, every component of the EMC8 works on my desktop, except the VideoWave which completely hangs up every time I try to make it work.
I've edited a photo in the Photo Editor and burned a music disk in the Music Editor since my latest reinstall. I did not install the Media Manager because I theorized that this might be interfering with the VideoWave, but I got exactly the same results: No go
Please, please, somebody help me make this VideoWave behave on my desktop. Working with my networked laptop involves too much back and forth in the shared files.

I have only one other suggestion. If the file you are trying to use is an DMSM file that you created in Videowave and you saved it to some folder on your computer, bring up Windows Explorer and go to that folder and double click on the named dmsm file (or right click and then click on open) and see if it will bring up the Videowave program with that dmsm file you saved.
My EMC 8 program would open up a saved dmsm file in Videowave either way. Either in the videowave program by clicking on File--Open OR the way I described above. Once in a while some of the EMC 8 programs will work correctly when you bring it up from the desktop Home page and then sometimes when that won't work it will work by going to Start--All Programs and running it from there. Don't ask why. I have no idea.
If you saved the Videowave dmsm file correctly the MyDVD program should be able to open it.

Frank, thanks for the suggestion. Yes, I've tried opening the .dmsm file or the production that previously worked, but all I get is the black rectangle. I've waited (even overnight once) for the file to register in the production editer, but nothing worked. Correction: the file name showed up on the top frame, but no image showed up and the buttons stopped responding. My dilemma is that I can't be sure the EMC9 will work; otherwise, I might even be willing to purchase it. Something in my computer must be stopping the VideoWave from engaging, but I can't determine what it might be.

By the same token, if you had a MyDVD file (DMSD) that had been saved, rather than trying to open it in MyDVD, opening it up from Windows explorer by clicking on the previously saved DMSD file should bring it up in the MyDVD program.
Sorry if I mislead you. I know better but just got a little mixed up (Too late at night I guess)
Opening up MyDVD might work correctly also if you go to START--ALL PROGRAMS and open MyDVD there rather than from the desktop home page for Roxio.

I'm going to turn off the computer and allow it to cool down overnight. Then I'm going to make a wish for my birthday on May 9: a program that works the way it used to even if my 70-year-old body doesn't!

Thank you, Everyone! My EMC8 is functioning again. In case you wonder what I did to get it to work: I removed the Windows Media Player 11. I downloaded and installed the newest driver for my video card, as the gurus suggested. Then I uninstalled, rebooted, and reinstalled the EMC8 program and content. I was able to go through the entire process of editing, adding text, overlays, etc. rendering and burning the DVD without a problem. It worked just fine on my TV-DVD player, too.
