I just fired up what I thought was EMC 9.0 and RoxioCentral is now labeled Multimedia Center for ThinkOfferings.  Okay so an upgrade took place without me knowing, but most of the programs in EMC 9.0 are gone.  What is this software?  How did it get there?  This is not an update to EMC 9.0 is it?

What do I need to do to get EMC 9.0 back?  Uninstall this crap, reboot, and put on EMC 9.0?  OMG, this is the last time I ever purchase a Roxio product!

Sounds like you downloaded and installed the Roxio Central Windows Vista Technology Preview.  This IS BETA software and you load it at your own risk.

Roxio Central is NOT a part of EMC 9.

Gary:

I am afraid to say that it updated itself over night.  I didn't do anything other than hit a reboot button this morning when I saw a prompt saying that the update needed to reboot to finish installing.  I haven't even used this product in over a week.  I am not sure what happened.

I had to uninstall that stuff and reinstall EMC 9.0.  It seems to have worked.  Hopefully the runtime errors on boot do not return or that memory and CPU hogging media search stuff.

Thanks for the info,
Mark

"Multimedia Center for ThinkOfferings" sounds more like malware. Is your computer on 24/7 and connected to the net?  As far as I know, Roxio software does not automatically update itself.

When I opened Roxio 9, I was immediately hit with an update announcement. MultimediaCenterForThinkOfferings905. It was listed as important. There was absolutely no warning that this was "beta software" and it was "use at your own risk". I saved it, but didn't install it. Thanks Roxio for trying to trick me into installing was has been called "beta software" and "malware" from your very own "digital guru's".

All I can honestly say is that I have never had that 'offer' come up any time I've run up the suite - it sounds very like something is on your computer that shouldn't be there

That looks like it's an IBM Thinkpad version then CD and not a 'standard' Roxio one

From the list cdanteek provided, it would appear it is essentially an OEM offering from IBM.

It also contains NO Roxio V9 programs…

Sounds like you downloaded and installed the Roxio Central Windows Vista Technology Preview.  This IS BETA software and you load it at your own risk.

Roxio Central is NOT a part of EMC 9.

I posted a thread yesterday, ("CAN'T INSTALL UPDATE"), about the same thing. I turned on my computer, opened Roxio EMC 9 and while working in it I got an automatic update from Roxio "updateservice.sonic.com" with the notation next to it: EMC9. It says,"Multimedia Center for Think Offerings v. 9.05*" But, after downloading and attempting to install it I got a dialog box advising "Setup cannot find a valid version of this software to upgrade. Please make sure you are using the correct upgrade version."

After learning that this appears to be ONLY for IBM/Lenovo Think computers I ignored it. However, I just opened my EMC 9 again and I got the same automatic download. But, this time I am just going to ignore it. However, after reading all the responses posted to this thread I seem to still be confused about some references made here as well as in searching my EMC 9, e.g., "ROXIO CENTRAL" and "ROXIO RETRIEVE." I have nothing (that I can find) saying "ROXIO CENTRAL," but when I open the program and do a search for it through the "Help" link I get referred to "ROXIO RETRIEVE" which I also can't find in my program. Since I purchased it direct from Roxio/Sonic, and downloaded from there site, I don't believe it's some bogus program.

Somebody needs to tell Roxio that they need STOP this "update" from automatically downloading angry.gif  and, instead, advise ONLY those having the appropriate program that they should download it.

It was supposed to be a demo for the projected Vista interface on EMC 10 (whenever that comes along in the future). It was NOT supposed to be an update, upgrade or even a recommended patch

Roxio Central is the GUI that Bruce posted.
It is essentially the interface that gives you the ability to launch various applications, ie. MyDVD9, Creator Classic, PhotoSuite..etc. (All depending on which package you got.)

Easy Media Creator, I believe, it's a relabeling of Roxio Central.

Bottom line, the OP doesn't own an IBM/Lenovo system and yet the Roxio application is prompting him to download an upgrade that's specifically designed for those systems.

It seems like an issue with the updater component in his build sending the wrong info to the updating server or the updating server is picking up the wrong build to push the Lenovo update to.

Roxio Retrieve is a Roxio application that works like a restore application.

Edit: Maybe one of the gurus can notify a Roxio staff to put a final say on this.
I mean, we are all users speculating.

Edited by Nerus, 23 May 2007 - 09:54 AM.

When in doubt, reinstall.
If it installs, it's supported.

The real problem is WHY the OP's system is going for that - there's nothing in EMC9 that would (or should) push for an IBM file which seems to be what is happening

Now why IBM has a Thinkpad version of that demo is something only IBM can answer

For those who keep saying they havn't found it, the ThinkOfferings update is available from start->Software updates (or, start->Control Panel, select software updates).  Once the utility has finished loading it shows the Multimedia Centre for ThinkOfferings v9.05.  It is listed as an EMC 9 update, AND as a sonic update.

"It seems like an issue with the updater component in his build sending the wrong info to the updating server or the updating server is picking up the wrong build to push the Lenovo update to."

It all depends on what the updater within the Roxio app is seeing as a valid update from the Roxio Update server.
1.  The update server sees the build on the OP's system as a Lenovo build.
2.  The updater within the app is sending the wrong info to the update server.
3. Whether the update server is Roxio's or Lenovo's, I don't know.

I don't believe it's anything to do with the system.
If that's the case, wouldn't the OP be receiving all updates from IBM themself?
In this case, it is only the Roxio application that's receiving an update.

Once again, if one of the guru's could contact a Roxio forum staff to release a statement on this.
So, in the future, we can all have something to reference too.

Edit: It's irrelevant to this thread what IBM have what for demo.

I have tried to replicate the problem believe it or not

Running 'check for updates' simply says there are NO updates available - ergo, whatever is causing that is NOT in the updater
