Hi Everyone,
Myself and a customer of mine are having the same problem with EMC8's Media Import. It loads fine (no crashing like many have reported). When I click on Photo or Audio, it gives one or two options. When I click on Video, and then Select Device field, nothing happens. The text in that field simply bolds and unbolds, no drop down list or nothing. The drop down arrow also provides no options to select from.
I have a Dell Precision 490 with 3 Ghz and 1 gig of RAM. I have Nvidia quadro NVS 285 graphics card. IE 7, WMP 9, DX 9.0C, XP SP2. I tried repairing my Roxio installation and rebooted and still the same problem.
I also have VideoWave Movie Creator which works perfectly fine. Problem is I have a customer with the same problem as I have in EMC8, thus I need to solve what is going on in EMC8. Odd that it works with one version of their products but not another version.
I am using a Firewire camcorder (Sony HandyCam DCR-HC46). My customer is using a Firewire VCR and is running XP SP2, IE 6 and WMP 10 (I do not have any other specs for her PC at this time).
Oh yeah and I tested my camera and firewire board with another softwre package and it all works fine, I have a preview and everything.
Thanks!
Media Import

Take it out - that's almost certainly the problem

Thanks for your response. I am resistant to do that as I have read that others have uninstalled IE7 and nothing was resolved. Also, my customer (with the EXACT same problem) that I am trying to assist has IE6. So my personal opinion is that is likely not the cause. I can certainly try it without harm but again the person I am trying to assist is running IE6, so this advice doesn't work for her which is more important to get her system up and running than my own system. So any other advice?

Honestly - IE7 and WMP11 wreck EMC8 and earlier. Whether you have a problem after removal is a different matter but it will NOT work while those are installed
If it ain't broke, fiddle with it until it breaks, then fiddle with it until you get it fixed

I have had a similar experience, even after uninstalling and reinstalling EMC 8. I suspect the problem showed up with the update to IE7 BUT I still only run Windows Media Player 10. The details are below. Will I have to get rid of IE7 to get EMC 8 media import to work?
I wonder if Roxio will repair this bug or simply leave it and make users upgrade to EMC 9.
That begs the question: Does this bug also exist in EMC 9?
It would be regrettable if EMC 8 users had to pay for an upgrade to EMC 9 (that I neither want nor need) just to fix Roxio's bug. IF I can't get EMC 8 working I have no choice but to ditch EMC and switch to other software.
I appreciate any suggestions.
Details:
Any time I attempt to use media import for videos, the program begins to load (sometimes with a splash screen, sometimes not) then simply disappears. There's no trace of it in Windows Task Manager either. I run Windows XP Media Center edition Version 2002 sp2 (with IE 7 and Media Player version 10) on a Sony VGC-R44G desktop with 2 GB RAM.

Yes - you will have to get rid of IE7 and also Media Player 11 if you installed those
Both IE7 and WMP11 are programs designed for Vista and were back ported to XP. They both make changes to the OS kernel and wreck a lot of apps, including EMC8.
It's not Roxio's fault that MS made those changes that stopped things working, but the solution is simple - don't use them. If you like a tabbed browser, use Firefox from www.mozilla.com

Sorry it took me so long to get back......
I uninstalled IE 7, which rolled me back to IE6 and still the same exact problem.
Roxio support has been giving me the run around to check things all of which were already current before this problem. No progress made anywhere.
When will they realize that there is a bug in their software and fix it or give a free upgrade to 9 (which I hear is not any better

Do a clean install of the program. It works for most folks, after getting rid of IE 7 and WMP 11.
Life is good!

I uninstalled and reinstalled 8 twice and same problem. Support told me to try the trial version of 9 so I installed/uninstalled that twice as well and almost the same problem there. In 9 I can select my device BUT it then reloads the same screen asking me to select a device. It never loads the capture settings or my image. I opened my support ticket to inform them of this and see if there are any patches for 9 for this problem.
It is looking like we (the company I work for, we buy about 200 copies a year) might have to changes products. I found Ulead VideoStudio 11 to work great with firewire. You can download a trial version from them.
